After Augustus's death, Hazel's cancer rapidly progressed. The doctors upped her dosage of Phalanxifor in an effort to recreate the miracle that had saved her before. The cancer persisted. It spread throughout her body. They tried everything. They tried chemo, radiation, even some new experimental treatments. But none succeeded. Hazel died three months after Augustus. No one had been on Phalanxifor for as long as Hazel had, so no one knew the consequences. The Phalanxifor lessened the existing tumor growth, but had one deadly side effect: it mutated other cells, therefore causing different types of cancer to develop. The miracle that had saved her life ended up being the thing that ultimately took her life in the end.
