"Emry, we just want you to know that what we're about to tell you may come as a bit of a shock." Jeremy declared, "Brace yourself."

Nerves surged through my stomach. My arms wrapped themselves around my legs, making me curl into a ball. Not wanting to talk, I stared intently at Lydia. Her soft, brown eyes caused me to relax. It was then that I realized how tense I was. I didn't want her and Jeremy to see how the anticipation was getting to me, so I tried my hardest to look nonchalant. Reluctantly unhooking my arms, I sat back on the couch.

"Go ahead, I'm ready." I surprised myself by how steady my voice was.

"I hardly know where to begin-"

"Please," I cut Jeremy off, "don't beat around the bush."

He looked at me in surprise but continued.

"If you insist." He took a deep breath, "Emry, your parents were killed about two years ago."

I rolled my eyes in frustration.

"Tell me something I don't know." I snapped. My parents' death was a sensitive subject for me, and I didn't appreciate it when people tried to act like they understood.

Lydia's head snapped up and she stared at me with wide eyes.

"You knew?" She asked incredulously.

A strange rage overcame me. I was not in the mood to discuss the death of my parents and she had pushed me over the edge.

"Of course I knew! How could I forget walking in on their dead bodies! I relive the whole thing almost every night!" I screamed. I didn't notice that I had stood up and was towering over the two of them.

"Emry, do you realize what that means?" She questioned.

"It means that I have no family anymore. It means I'm an orphan. A freaking nineteen year old orphan!"

I saw Jeremy flinch as if what I said had hurt him. He stood up and grabbed my hand, looking directly into my eyes. Guilt overwhelmed me as I realized that I had just screamed at the two people who had been nothing but kind to me. Excluding the kidnapping part. I closed my eyes in an attempt to calm down. Lydia rubbed my arm soothingly and asked me to sit back down. Without hesitation, I obeyed.

"You have just given us brand new information that is going to change everything." the calm woman explained. "You see," she began, "you were supposed to forget everything from that night when your parents died."

My eyebrows shot up. I couldn't make sense of my thoughts. I was supposed to forget everything? Jeremy obviously noticed my confusion, for he spoke up.

"What else can you remember from that night?" He questioned.

After pausing for a moment to think, I began.

"I just remember walking into my house and finding them..."

My voice cracked and I felt tears threatening to fall. I held them in stubbornly. These people were not going to see me cry. Nobody ever did and I wasn't about to let that change. Trying my hardest to remember anything else, a memory slowly filled my mind.

"Oh my gosh..." I said, amazed that I had forgotten it.

"What? What is it?" Jeremy implored.

"I... I remember seeing four men. They looked no older than forty. And I remember one... one of them got really close to me and... I can't remember anything past that."

When I glanced at Lydia, she looked as if she had seen a ghost. Wondering if it was what I said that had unnerved her I tried to keep quiet. Jeremy was speechless as well and the silence was ringing in my ears.  My eyes darted from the older woman to the sharp young man sitting before me. Anticipation making my stomach clench. After what seemed like several minutes, Lydia spoke.

"That man, the one who you said came towards you, he tried to erase your memory that night." She said slowly as if she didn't believe it herself.

At these words, my mind went off at an alarming pace. Thousands of thought were all swarming through my head. I hadn't known that there were other people out there who could control minds. I had thought that I was the only one, for it was such a strange and unbelievable gift. I voiced my thoughts aloud.

"You're saying that there are more people like me?"

"Not exactly like you. We now believe that you have a gift that exceeds the average Mind Reader's abilities. I have never heard of anybody who has regained their memory after it being erased." Jeremy said.

"Well, I only just started to get my memory back. It was about 6 months ago when I began having dreams of that night. But if what you're saying is true, that I shouldn't be able to remember anything at all, then what am I supposed to do?"

"Stay with us." Jeremy said simply.

Lydia nodded in agreement. Her eyes full of wonder and what seemed like awe.

"Emry, you have a very special gift. And that is why you are here with us."

"What do you mean by that?" I asked.

"Those men who were in your house are looking for you. They have been ever since that night two years ago. We are here to Protect you from them."

"I think I'm perfectly capable of keeping away from them all by myself, thanks. I've been doing it for two years now." I snapped.

"We understand that, Emry. But these people are very cunning and they aren't going to give up looking until they find you. What we need you to do right now, is stay here and let us keep you safe. It's our job, after all. We go by the title, Protectors, we are individually assigned people who are in danger of the wicked sorcerers in the world."

"Which one of you was assigned to me?" I asked looking up at them.

"It wasn't either of us." Jeremy said. "It was Griffin."
