I didn't let myself think, I just acted. My mind knew exactly what it was doing. At first, Jeremy was reluctant to let me in, but after a couple attempts, he finally opened up.
What is he trying to hide?
I quickly dismissed the thought and focused on the task at hand. Images swirled through my vision. I saw glimpses of numbers. 24. The number flashed until it was all I could see.
24.
What does 24 mean?
24.
And then it hit me. Jeremy was 24 years old. That was it. The piece of information I hadn't known before. Knowing I had succeeded, I began to pull out of his mind. But something caught my eye. An image of a beautiful young woman at the back of his mind. I felt Jeremy try to pull out, but I was too strong and much too curious. I called the image of the woman forward. Though Jeremy fought to hide it, I easily overpowered him.
A tall woman. With dirty blond hair and a charming smile. She looked as if she could conquer the world, right then and there.
Suddenly, dark clouds swarmed around her. Fear filled her eyes and I tried to make sense of what it meant. The clouds got thicker and thicker until I could no longer see her. A familiar painful feeling ripped through my chest.
Loss.
When the clouds dispersed, the woman was gone and a small golden ring lay where she stood.
Jeremy lost this woman.
A small golden ring.
They were engaged.
That, I thought, that was what he was trying to hide.
Knowing I'd seen too much, I urgently exited Jeremy's mind. Nervously looking up at him, I saw the anger was clear on his face. I tried to smile apologetically, but it felt more like a grimace. Before I could even open my mouth to apologize, he already threw his chair back in anger.
"That was an invasion of my privacy," he growled.
"I-"
"Do me a favor, and stay away from me,"
Then he left the room without another word. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lydia stand, and heard the door to Jeremy's room down the hall slam, making me flinch with guilt.
"Emry, what-" she began.
"I don't want to talk about it," I snapped and hurried out of the room. Angry tears filled my vision as I made my way to the front door. Quickly swinging it open after grabbing my dark brown leather jacket, I silently slipped outside and made my way to the crowded street. Seeing the familiar bustle around me, I instantly felt better. I quickly merged in with the many people rushing to get to their destinations. People to see, places to be, things to do, but I had no goal in mind except to wander; to escape the stresses of my extremely abnormal life. I smiled at the beauty of it, all the people were much to busy to even dream of a life like mine. But there I was, walking among them.
Shaking my head, I continued down the street, heading towards a small, quiet, cafe at the end of the road. My mind escaped me, and wandered to a place unknown, as my body slowly made its way to my destination.
"Where are you going?" I heard him ask casually, pulling me out of my trance.
I rolled my eyes. Couldn't he just leave me alone for two minutes?
I didn't look at him as I replied.
"What do you want, Griffin?"
"To know where you're going, obviously." he said smartly.
I abruptly stopped and turned around to look at him.
"Why can't you let me be?" I asked, anger creeping into my voice.
"Well," he said, "I am your Protector. You do know what that means, right?"
Resisting the urge to slap him, I put my hands on my hips.
"Then Protect me from a distance, because I don't want to hear your annoying voice. It's kind of the reason I left the house." I retorted.
In an instant, he was dangerously close to me, his eyes locked on mine. I couldn't look away, for fear of him taking it as an act of submission, but I also couldn't stand to see his frighteningly striking eyes.
"Watch what you say, Emry." He said in such a low voice, I barely heard it.
So I smiled innocently at him, turned away, and continued my pursuit of the small cafe without a second glance. When I arrived, I happily approached the waitress and ordered a hot chocolate to warm my cold bones. Sitting down at a table in the back corner, I watched Griffin enter and order a hot chocolate for himself, and sit down next to me.
He didn't beat around the bush when he asked.
"So why is Jeremy so angry at you?"
I paused mid-sip and looked at him incredulously.
"What makes you think I'm going to tell you?" I felt some cocoa dribble down my chin and I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand.
His lip twitched slightly but he didn't laugh.
"Well, we need the piece of information that you found before you... messed around in his brain..." he trailed off.
"I didn't 'mess around in his brain'"I snapped quickly, "I was just curious..."
"About what?" he implored.
I sighed and tilted my head up towards the ceiling. Knowing that he wouldn't leave me alone until I told him, I caved.
"I saw a woman at the back of his mind... and I wanted to know who it was."
Then I began to pick at my nails guiltily.
"Oh," I added, "Jeremy's 24 years old. I found that out."
Griffin nodded in approval and propped his chin on his hand, looking at me.
"So what did you find out about this woman?"
"Well... they were in love,"
He nodded again, eyebrows raised.
"And... they were engaged..." I paused, not knowing how to say it, "I think she was killed."
When I looked up at Griffin, his eyes were unfocused, looking anywhere but at me.
"Did you know that?" I asked.
"No," he said shaking his head, "No, I didn't know that."
