Refuge

In times of anger

In times of sadness

In times of complete despair

I go outside

My bow in hand

And let arrows fly into the air.

The bow is strung

The arrow nocked

The string taut and still

As I pull

The mighty bow back

Bending it to my will.

Right next to my eye

The fletching sits

Waiting for my call

To zoom away

And wound the target

Ending the fight once and for all.

One final aim

Just to be sure

My calculations were right

Before releasing the string

And watching

As the arrow zips out of sight.

And with the arrow

Go my fears

My anger and sadness too

All dissipating

In my love

For the careful sport I do.

The arrow spins

As it flies away

And my heart soars with it too

After a heartbeat

And then another

The arrow breaks the target in two.

My excitement

I push down hard

Trying to keep it inside;

Miserably I fail

And my smile

Shows the world my pride.

I tell no one

About my triumph

Because all that it will do

Is reveal to them

My hiding place

And that's a secret between me and you.
