Ceiling Memories - Chapter Four

****************

Elizabeth's POV

****************

I slowly blinked my eyes open, shifting my head to avoid the glare of the sun. I hear quiet chatter off to my left, but I can barely shift my head in order to see who it is. Slowly I see if I can move at all, and to my amusement, I can. My palm cradles my head as I shift so I'm staring at the blank ceiling. This small movement send my mind reeling, and my eyes lose focus for a brief second. But in that short period, my mind goes back, to a very similar scene.

-

It was the last day of school, I remember because my mom had done my hair. I had to wait after school for a ride home, so I had been waiting in a classroom for her to call me. After waiting a long time, I got up and looked into the hallway, before hearing a muffled sob followed by snickering. I was a naturally curious child, so I stepped out and began sneaking down the halls. I remember stumbling around before finding a boy lying on the ground. I remember asking if he could stand up, he gave a weak nod yes. He stumbled up and opened his mouth to say something before I felt a punch to the back of the head. My knees buckled underneath me and I crumpled to the ground, cradling my head.

"C'mon, lets go." I heard someone say as the ceiling swirled above me. 'I don't want her to see us."

Feet scuffed the floor and then they were gone, but then a pair came into my distorted view.

"I- I didn't know they'd hurt you." The voice said as I swallowed back my sobs. I managed a glimpse up and saw his face. He was one grade ahead of me, his hair was messy and his eyes glistened.

"I'm Mark." He offered his hand to help me up.

-

I groaned a little, hoping to get the attention of whoever was talking in my apartment. Most likely Sammie, but the other voice? I could barely make them out, but the other was too low to be a female. saw Sammie come into my view and I broke into a smile, and she reached down to hug me.

"I was worried sick!" She whispered in my ear, still holding me. 'I'm so happy you're safe." A heavy breath blew past my ear as she straightened up and ran her hands through her disheveled hair.

"Don't you want to know what happened?" I tried to prop myself up on my elbows and ended flat on my back again. Sammie placed a hand on my stomach, and scowled at me slightly.

"Don't get up. Your friend told me about the fight."

"Friend-?" I manage to spit out before he comes into view.

It was the guy, the one who took me out of the bar.

He smiled and the pieces clicked together in my head.

It was Mark.

He was anonymous.

"Hi Elizabeth," He smiled at me and pushed his glasses further up his nose. 'Long time no see."

My breath catches in my throat, we were never good friends, but I kept with him on Youtube because I wanted to make sure he was okay. Better off than me. I hoped.

"Hey Mark, it's been awhile, hasn't it?" I smirked at him, but I had missed him. I don't think last night really counted as 'meeting' him again. Mark smiled at me and placed a hand on the top of my head, running it through my hair.

"I'll be back soon, Sammie seems apt to take care of you." He leans down close to me. 'I think." And with a wink he's got his coat on and he's out the door.

"God Liz, you got great taste in men." She winks as she puts a damp towel on my forehead. I push her arm slightly and laugh. "Really? He's just showed up again, there's probably nothing."

Sammie grins at me, and then kisses the top of my head before heading to the open window.

"I'm not a child Sammie!"

"Don't fight me young lady!"

"Sammie!"

"I'll be upstairs. call if you need anything!"

And with that I can hear her slip out the window onto the fire escape.

My mind wanders back to Mark, as I stare back up at the ceiling.

Could he really be back?
