The fresh, blissful scent travelled up her nose before she even set a foot inside. It was a distinct scent that never failed to bring a smile to her face, a scent that was way more appealing than any drug: the smell of books.

As Chae stepped onto the threshold of the school library, a familiar mop of messy curls bobbed up to face her. The girl's youthful face showed the exact same devious expression Chae held as her feet carried her over to the table the brunette sat on.

"Bitch, you're late! You're never late to literature club," she snickered, earning a chuckle from the raven-haired girl. Chae raised her hand in a peace sign, as Aika lightly smacked her shoulder with a book.

"Well, I wouldn't have woken up late if I didn't binge on your stories last night. By the way, when are coming out with your new book? It's been a year! I need to know who Ruby ends up with," She whispered excitedly, smacking Aika's shoulder in return with a hardbound book.

Aika, Chae's closest friend, is an up and coming author in the world of literature. Even in her teens, Aika is already recognized as a prodigy everytime she put pen to paper. Chae would always be proud to declare that Aika and her had been friends since childhood and that she had been there to witness Aika first weave her magic into the stories she wrote. In fact, Chae was probably the young author's number one fan. She owed her love for books to Aika as she was the person who captivated Chae with the power of stories. Since then, Aika had became Chae's inspiration for writing although, admittedly, she knew that her level of skill was way below her best friend's.

A cough broke the girls' conversation, which brought their gaze towards the librarian's counter. The librarian glanced up - a warning - at the two through the frame of her glasses before resuming her job of scanning books. The raven-haired girl shared a wide-eyed look with her friend before she dragged Aika to the shelves furthest from the counter.

"Okay, she's kind of scary. I definitely do not want to cross her path," Chae breathed out while Aika let out a snort.

"Nah, the only thing scary about her is her dangerously thin brows," She made a face, making Chae choke in her laughter. Aika's sense of humor was seriously mean but the two were just too tuned in with each other that it didn't even matter sometimes.

"Hey, I asked you a question. When is your next book coming out? Don't make me wait, hoe!" Chae whisper shouted, expecting her best friend to share the same level of excitment she was feeling. Instead, the brunette's smiling face fell and was replaced with a somber expression, her usually vibrant eyes downcast. The words she uttered next were words Chae never expected to hear out of her mouth.

"I'm quitting, Chae."

A sudden weight dropped down on her stomach as she stood in front of her best friend - her idol - slack-jawed. It felt as if a chill had run through the girl's nerves as she floundered about for coherent words.
