book: A Monster Calls

author: Patrick Ness

blurb: A darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor.

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting - he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

review: This is always one of those books that everyone raves about, and I'm yet to find anyone who disliked it. So I was very excited to read it, and I was not disappointed.

I'm really sad that I didn't have the illustrated version which is apparently incredible, but the story by itself was still very charming and interesting to read. I loved the fantastical elements to it which were interwoven with the real life situation, and I thought it was such a clever way of discussing such an important matter.

It was super easy to just keep on reading hence why I got it finished in one day, and I think it's a really great read for people who are in reading slumps or needing a new book in their lives. I would recommend this to people, but I feel like the illustrated version would be even better.
