Inside a room dominated by darkness, a resting panda laid face down on a pillow. The little, white toes peeking out of the only part of the bed unprotected by brown sheets wiggled at the warmth of a small ray of light penetrating through a gap in the curtains.
The quiet atmosphere abruptly faded when the phone on his shelf vibrated, waking the bear up. A grunt of disappointment was his first response as he extended his paw towards the smartphone. After missing it a few times, he successfully grasped it in his paw.
The panda twisted his body around, now staring at the ceiling, turned on the screen only to squint at the strong light emanating from it. Once adjusted, he scrolled through his apps and found a new message from his ex-classmate, Cody.
A nostalgic vibe overwhelmed him as he read the message.
"Hey Nova! How's it going there? I miss you a lot, the entire class misses you a lot. It's hard to get used to it. I'm sure you're having a hard time as well, right? Moving out and stuff. You gotta tell me everything! I wanna know more about Manard City."
He typed back, seeing his friend still online. "Hey Cody..."
His friend was used to his writing style, picking up the hint was simple. "What's up? Are you depressed?"
It was pointless to hide his lack of motivation and satisfaction. "Kinda..."
His tone soon shifted, worried and concerned for the panda's health. "At this point I would barge in your room, make a mess and cheer you up but, well, you're a little too far now. Keep yourself busy I guess. What are you doing?"
"I'm laying in bed." He shamelessly admitted, knowing his friend would disapprove.
Cody looked at the time, now deadly serious. "Nova, it's four PM. Have you been sleeping the whole time?! This isn't like you..."
He took a deep breath and sighed. "I'm trying..."
"Are you really? You've always been full of energy. Stand up and get going!" He could tell his friend didn't fully believe him.
Nova yawned, his body rebelling. "Five more minutes..."
"Alright, but just five. There's something I wanna show you."
Nova's phone vibrated again, showing a photo of him, Cody and his entire class during their last day together. The panda was quiet as he observed the picture, taking every little detail out, the people he met and interacted with, their little quirks showing that he learned so well. Cody, the little pangolin sitting on his shoulder, wore a bandana he'd never changed even when he owned thousands of different pairs. He was obsessed with wearing the same one.
"I...hope it didn't make you feel worse." He typed, interrupting Nova from reminiscing about his past school memories.
"I miss my life, Cody." The panda tightened his grip on his phone.
"I know, but it's not the end. You gotta keep movin' dude! I'm sure you'll make more friends in your new school. Just don't forget about me!" Though the last line was a joke, he meant every word.
