What happened? I was just starting to finally accepting myself. It was so sudden, I did not expect it at all.

It was a winter night. Normally, I would've take a shower, but I was feeling lazy. I decided to just wash my hair in the kitchen sink, making sure that at least, my dark brown hair would be cleaned and ready for another two or three days of school. That's when my mom passed by and looked at the back of my hair, touching it slightly.

"Did you shave your hair, Sophie?" She asked, frowning slightly. I had pulled this a few times on her. She never really allowed me to cut my own hair, as I always messed it up and ended with a stupid haircut. "No, I haven't. Why is that?" I replied, washing the shampoo off my hair. She was a hairstylist of formation but never actually exercised her formation.

As soon as I finished drying my hair up, leaving the rest of the water that had soaked my hair air dry, as I usually do, I went to my mom so she could have a closer look. "I think I know what's going on, but to be sure, we're going to the doctor's office first thing in the morning tomorrow." She seemed worried, her face expressing fear and concern as she touched the bald spot. "What is it mom? Is it dangerous?" I asked, sighing. Deep down, I didn't thought it was that worrying because I didn't saw what it was really.

"Alopecia. It's a hair loss." She dropped the bomb and I quickly turned to her, frowning. "Are you serious? I'm balding?" I asked, touching the spot. It was soft, as if I never had any hair on the skin. That's when I started panicking. For real. I was 13. I couldn't be balding like an old man. She nodded and added that the doctor will only confirm her diagnosis. I felt the tears brim my eyes and my cheek getting warm, sign I was pissed off. "That can't be true, mom. Such things doesn't exist." I said quite sternly and got up, walking to my room. Great. I was only starting to get my mind back together after years of bullying that was still ongoing, but less present and I had to face another thing that would surely bring me into the mess I was. That night, I haven't slept at all, watching the hours pass by as my thoughts raced.

The next day, the wait at the doctor's office was long and boring, like always whenever I came there. Once we were in the office, my mother explained the problem and the doctor got up and moved my hair carefully, glancing at the spot. That's when my world crumbled and that I would spend the next three years juggling with hospitalisation and treatments.

It was long until I got to see the dermatologist, whom was a nice lady. But the thing is, she was as clueless as me on a way to get rid of Alopecia. Oh what ride was I in for?
