Everybody has experienced a dress code at some point or another but they do not know what that does to a growing woman's self-esteem. Girls at a young age are told that their clothing should be modest and not attention seeking no matter the weather. Dress codes mostly do not apply to the male population, but for females the wardrobe options that fit most dress codes are somewhat hard to find depending on the dress code and the body type and size of the woman. Everybody hears about the girls who are sent home because they showed to much shoulder or their bra strap and had nothing to cover up, but nobody hears about how much school the girls miss because they broke dress code to be comfortable for the weather. Nobody hears about the girls who go back to school shopping only to find out the clothing that they picked out for that year was unacceptable because of change in the dress code. While schools may think that the dress code is teaching people how to dress professionally,it is also killing a young girl's self-esteem. They do not understand how hard it is to find clothing that is fashionable and also function for the dress code. How people have to get up extremely early to find clothing that works with dress code and is still comfortable. Leggings and yoga pants are quick and easy to style and are comfortable but dress codes make it just a little bit harder because not everybody has a dress, skirt, or shirt that would work well with the leggings and not everybody wants to wear a sweatshirt everyday. Dress codes are also not easy for parents because who wants to get a call in the middle of work saying that your child is in the office and needs a new outfit because the one they wore to school broke the dress code and that if they dont bring the clothing the child would be sent home or suspended. Dress codes may be good in some cases it is harmful to girls because they lose time learning because of their outfit and feel like they are not getting an equal education because their clothing is the only thing getting called out and not other peers in their class.
