Ch. 6

Twigs and leaves snagged in her hair as she followed the masked man. They seemed to walk on forever, and the trees blotted out the sun so that it seemed to stay in perpetual night. He walked a couple of yards in front of her, disturbingly quiet despite the crisp leaves he trod on. Masky came to a stop in front of a small gap in the trees. (Y/n) barely allowed herself to breathe as she awaited his next move. 

"I'm going to be honest with you," he started, startling the girl. "I trust and am far more interested in you than I should be." He turned to face her, his white mask seeming to almost glow in the otherwise dark forest.

He had never said this much to her, and she could tell this was abnormal for him; he'd probably never talked this much to anyone in his life.

(Y/n) nodded, she felt the same way. "I suppose you and I have at least that in common, then." She gave a small, fleeting smile. I could probably ask him to take off his mask, and he might do it, she realized, but didn't want to put him in that sort of position.

"So what now? You kill me?" She asked. "Or leave and I'll never see you again?"

"No."

The certainty in Masky's voice startled her.

"Why not?" Her soft voice could barely be heard over the rustling of the leaves at the sudden breeze that kicked up.

"I... I can't. I couldn't kill you if I wanted to, and I can't leave..." He trailed off. 

"Can't leave...?" (Y/n) repeated, concern evident.

Taking hesitant steps toward her, he was reluctant to answer. "Nothing you'll have to worry about." I hope, he added in his head. 

Sensing he was uncomfortable with the subject, she tried another approach. "So," she gave him a cheeky grin, "what's with the mask?"

She could almost see him smile under the mask as he chuckled. "I figured you'd ask that sooner or later." He turned away, gesturing her to follow. "How about we take a walk? I'll tell you on the way."

"I've followed you this far," she shrugged, grinning, "I don't see why not."

Hi guys!!! I'm back, and thank you soooo much for sticking with me during break. Updates will be slower than they were before, because honestly, I haven't planned anything beyond this, so the plot will now be harder and so take longer to develop.
