Hey, my names Rosa Strauss. I'm the fourth child to a mean lady named Bell Strauss, but I'm the only one living with her. You see, all my siblings left once they were 18 and didn't look back, and my Pa died in a car crash right after I was born.
My mom is one hell of a alcoholic, so that made me the one that did everything around the house. "Do the dishes and clean the backyard! Do the laundry! Make dinner!" My Ma slurred her words from the whiskey she held in her hand. I hated every single day, and I couldn't run away... except on Sundays.
On Sundays my Ma had a little wine party for all the other fucked up single moms in the neighborhood and kicked me out so I didn't bother them. On Sunday I had freedom, but this day was a little different..."I'm going out, Ma!" I yelled, grabbing my backpack. My Mom was silent for a few moments, but suddenly she hiccuped, looked at me, and threw a beer bottle on the ground.
"Don't yell at me!" She got up from the greasy, stained couch and grabbed my arm. I looked up at her with fear as she quickly slapped my face with full force. I inhaled deeply from the pain and held back tears.
"I'm sorry-" I started.
"Don't start apologizing. You're the reason everyone else is gone. The reason I'm in debt. And you're the reason I'm like this," Her voice was slurred. The wine bottle she held in her hand was almost empty.
"But I-"
SLAP
She slapped me again and then shoved me down to the floor.
"Your big brother had a choice to take you out of this home, but he left you! You know -HIC- why? Cause he don't give a shit 'bout you!" My Ma screamed this time.
I ran up the stairs to my room as fast as I could and locked the door behind me. She followed me and started pounding on my door.
"Leave me alone!" I started to pack my things, my body still shaking. Everything had happened so fast I didn't know what exactly to think. I opened my backpack and put all that I could in there. Grabbing my beat up skateboard, I looked to the door where my Ma was still tying to break in. "I'm so sorry Ma," I whispered.
I climbed out the window and grabbed onto the nearby tree branch. I slid down the tree trunk and got into my old white car. Looking into the side view mirror, I saw my Mom coming outside to catch up to me. I put the key in the ignition and started to drive quickly out of the driveway.
I looked over to my house and saw my Mom jumping up and down in anger, spitting and hollering slurs at me. I wiped away my tears and went faster.
I stopped at a gas station, filled up the car with gas, and bought a bunch of snacks for the road. I didn't know where I was going, probably east? But all I wanted then and there was to leave that tiny town in California. After buying my things, I left and started to drive to the freeway. It was going to be a long night...
