Now that you have an idea for a power, you need to discover its source. These abilities didn't just come out of thin air (unless you can manipulate air, then it sort of did).

There are many types of power sources that are overused. These include. . .

A magic stone

A cursed gem

A car / plane crash

An ancient relic

A mysterious glowing object

An unidentified object from space

This list could go on for a while. But the point is, there are so many power sources that are just carelessly thrown into a hero's backstory and never truly given the recognition that it deserves. The source of the power should have a layering story to it, something that unravels during the depths of the story.

Here are a few power sources that are underused, or have never been used before.

A planet

The core of the earth itself

An animal

A body of water

A building

The clouds / the sun

Your source can be something very unpredictable, such as a pen or a chair or a gas station, or something more realistic, such as a star.

Your source doesn't need to be a large part of the story, just remember that it's always going to be a large part of your oc's life. It fuels their power, and they could be dead without it.
