When Kakashi was young he had a fear of birds.

It wasn't the most rational of phobias but to him, it was justified. He was raised by a single Father, meaning Hatake Sakumo worked constantly. Growing up, Kakashi was always taken care of by his uncle.

Hatake Minato was a lot different from Sakumo, and when Kakashi first met his (adopted) uncle he seriously questioned how two people raised together could end up so differently. Minato was the definition of sunshine itself, while Sakumo preferred moments of solace only brought upon by a quiet, lonely life.

Yet Sakumo was the air to Minato's fire, neither could exist without the other. So, of course, Minato would do anything for his older brother, even taking care of his overly quiet uncle.

Kakashi didn't mind, he liked his uncle Minato. The man could be loud and overbearing sometimes, but he had a heart of gold that almost seemed too good for their dark world.

What Kakashi liked most about his uncle Minato, though, was his beautiful pet Macaw. Its coat reminded the boy of a rainbow. The bird, or Gerald as he was named, looked like he had been taken straight out of Kakashi's colouring book and Kakashi loved that.

Whenever he went to uncle Minato's house, he would always head straight for Gerald. Gerald was quiet than most birds, softer. He barely chirped, so when he did Kakashi knew it was something urgent. The bird, like Kakashi, preferred silence. He preferred to sit and watch the sunset, as the rain starts to fall.

It was a wonder how a bird of all things could understand Kakashi better than anyone else in this world, in Tokyo. Better than his father could; his father who he saw less of with each passing day.

"Uncle?"

Kakashi could pinpoint the exact moment he started hating birds. Starting fearing them.

"Uncle Minato?"

He could remember that cold Winter's eve. The panel windows shook violently under the pressure of the wind, the rain battling loudly against the tin roof. A particularly wild storm ravaged the 9th Ward that night, a particular storm Kakashi would never forget.

He had been shaken awake by the sound of screeching. Loud, horrible screeching. The sound had caused his heart to drop to his feet, he was too scared to move; to breath. There was a foul stench in the air, one that made Kakashi's eyes water and his toes curl.

At barely nine-years-old, Kakashi willed the strength to stand up. He can remember how afraid he was, the slight hum of white noise in the background as he slowly walked down the wooden-panelled hallway of his uncle's apartment.

The screeching never stopped.

Only, for a moment, it was joined by another sound. Not screeching but screaming. Not one of just fear, but pure, unadulterated terror

He could hear gargling, and laughter, and more screams, and even more screeching.

It was almost innocent, the way he did it. Slowly pulling open the sliding door, letting out a soft "hello?" into the dark night and the even darker room.
