The girl with the long brown hair held me too tightly. Almost too tightly. She understood nothing about lagomorphs, I thought. Not to mention being too high off the ground for comfort. It was scary up here, in a stranger's arms. And far away from the perfect smooth ground and my home in the ground.

I kicked her in the midsection with my powerful hind legs, making her drop me and clutch her stomach in pain. I twisted my body and landed on the ground gracefully, bounding off into the distance.

I turned back after traveling ten feet. She was still staring at me with those big almond eyes, her eyes seemingly burning through mine. Please, come back. I didn't mean to hurt you.

I left without looking back again. I didn't quite hate her, nor like her. But I thought that she was a danger to me, with her rashness. After all, what kind of humanoid picked up wild rabbits randomly? Apparently, ones who were caring and compassionate. Because she became the fennel girl, my very best humanoid friend.

I was eating grass when she approached me. She spoke softly to me this time. I'm sorry about last time. Really. I just want to be your friend.

She was an animal whisperer, indeed.

She said she would be my friend, and she kept her promises. She never told me her name, but I called her the fennel girl because I loved her as much as I loved fennel.

She spent the summer with me, and I wished it never ended.

But all good things come to an end, and that included my first friendship.

She visited me daily until the last day. She was leaving. My tiny heart broke that my only friend would be gone the next day.

She gave me a farewell present. A stalk of fennel. Farewell.

I guess she knew after all, I thought as her vanishing figure grew smaller and smaller. I stood on the fields until she was nothing more than a dot in the distance.

Friendship was fragile.
