When she first stepped into the school, she was what was on everybody's mind. They just stared at her as she walked down the hallways and went she turned to her classroom, EVERYBODY would start talking about her. Even the teachers. I mean come on! That is just sad. But the worst part is, is that everyone would make rumors about her. The person who shared their 'information' knew it was fake but everyone who heard thought it was true.

She doesn't know she's special. I can tell she doesn't talk or utter a single word, except to me. For the past year I've knocked on her door in the morning to pick her up, and I told her parents that I was sent to drop her of at school. No one lies in this society so they never questioned me.

I saw less of my friends and more of her. The little times I was around of my friends, they would usually talk poorly about her. I tried to convince them that she wasn't all that bad but they never listened. They laughed at what I had said and kept on judging the girl with the green eyes. Little did they know, that when I was supposedly having "family time" or "doing chores" I was hanging out with Alaska.

Persia, a friend of mine I have known for quite a while, invited me to hang out with her after school today, so I won't be walking Alaska home today. Of course she knows her way but, I feel bad for leaving her to walk alone. After school was over and we were all dismissed, Persia slipped her hand into mine and walked with me to the field next to the school. This (holding hands or other affection done publicly) was rarely done. In public. She talked and talked and talked on about herself and then she look over my shoulder, raised her delicate eyebrow and smirked.

I turned to see what she was looking at and saw Alaska surrounded by 3 girls and 4 guys yelling at her, tugging her hair and pushing her around.

"Crap," I whispered to myself and I scrambled up on my feet to help her when I felt a tug at my left hand. I turned my head and found Persia with a dirty look on her face.

"What are you doing Berlin?"

"The question is what are YOU doing Persia?"

"Why do you want to help," she looked over my shoulder, at Alaska and scowled, "her...?"

I frowned at Persia and demanded, "Let. Me. Go." Her grip tighten around my wrist. Her nails started to dig into my skin leaving little marks. "Now." I felt her hand loosen from the tight grip and she looked down sadly. I would have felt pity but she was the least of my worries.

I sprinted all the way to where Alaska was and yanked her from the gang and stood her behind me. These guys were way older than me so if they picked a fight I would get beaten easily. Without taking my eyes off of the older kids, I asked Alaska, "Are you okay?"

Silence.

...

She's fine.

"What the hell are you do-" Before I could finish my sentence, I felt someone's hard knuckles against my jaw. I put one of my hands over where I felt the collision with my face.

So this is how we're gonna handle this...

"You know this isn't what this society has taught us," I smirked while getting in a fighting stance. The three girls backed off and the four guys studied me as if they were thinking of a plan to on how to beat me to a pulp and all the while they were cracking their knuckles like those cliche bullies in the movies. I'm hoping there aren't any supervisors around....

I glared at them without breaking my stance when finally someone threw a punch to my stomach. I jumped back dodging it. Before I could even blink, a two punches were thrown to me, but this time to my face. The guy barely missed my eye... the first time. The second hit my nose. I stumbled back and started to feel the blood trickling down my nose and down my chin. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and whispered to myself, "It's my turn now."

I sprinted towards the smallest guy in the group and went right for his throat. I slammed my fist onto his neck, flashed behind him and kicked the back of his knees which made him fall face first on the floor. Too bad it wasn't dirt... just sterilized crap. I kicked his side. One down, three to go.

I realized I was staring at the fallen boy so, I whipped my head up back to the action just to see two people charging towards me with fists up in the air. I limbo-ed under them and gritted my teeth.

That was close.

Too close.

When I turned to the boy... boys that charged at me, they weren't in a fighting stance anymore, they were snickering at me.

Wait!

I just realized there was a fourth boy.

One of the strongest individuals in the entire society.

Ukraine.

I tensed up.

I felt a strong kick against my back which sent me flying in the air and over three heads, Austin and Dallas -the identical twins that attempted to hit me- and Alaska. I hit the ground and slid another two feet on the stupid floor.

It hurts so much. I tried my best not to show it. So hard. I start to feel my blood slip out of my forehead now. I feel so weak. I tried to get up. I push my chest up with my hands just to fail and fall back to the floor.

I feel a bit dizzy. That isn't very good last time I checked...

Oh god.

Alaska.

I looked up to see her facing Ukraine and Ukraine looking at her.

And that's when everything went black.
