Chapter Two
The Past
Alice's POV
I was driving down the road when my mind started to wander to my roommates of six years. It was a coincidence that we met. I could have chosen any other ads for a roommate but this one just seemed to be more like my style.
*Flashback*
I walked down to the elevator of my new apartment I got the day I arrived to New York. Because of my job the agency provided a nice apartment but I wanted people to interact with daily besides people I work with. The elevator dings and I step in continuing my thoughts. Even if I had to keep a few things from them, then so be it. If it keeps them safe from not knowing then it would be fine to keep a few secrets. When the elevator dings again I throw my thoughts to the back of my mind and make my way to the main desk. Oliver is standing where he was the day before and smiled when he noticed me walking towards him.
"Good morning Ms. Wolf. Is everything alright?" Oliver was a sweet kid. I was going to miss him when I move out.
"Hey Oliver, everything's fine but is there a paper that I can have?" Oliver reaches under the desk and hands me a thick and probably full of worthless pieces of information. I flipped it all the way to the back for ads about roommates. There were a few but none of them really popped out at me. I was about to close the paper when I saw the little, itty, bitty ad in the bottom left corner. Looking closer the ad was for a roommate. Just what I was looking for. It listed two names, Alex and Rose, and an address. I looked for anything else on the page related to the ad but there was nothing. I closed the paper all the way and silently handed it back to Oliver. He had a look of question on his face but I only shook my head not willing to share my questions with him. You might say it's wired to not talk to someone and work out you questions with them but I like to work solo. That's what got me so far at my job. It might seem selfish of me to not help any of my so called "friends" but me working with a team just didn't go together. Having the address memorized I signaled Oliver to get someone to fetch my bike, no it's not some wimpy two wheel bike that old couples ride together, don't get me wrong that's cute and all just not me, I headed outside in the blistering cold of New York. Being from South Carolina I was accustomed to much warmer weather than here. By the time I got out of the door and down the steps my bike was already waiting with a door man waiting with the keys in his hand. I walked past him, grabbed the keys and mumbled my thanks. Turning the key, the bike rumbled to life. I smiled as I kick the stand up and drove off into the craziness of traffic headed for the outskirts of New York. Even though I was new to New York it doesn't mean that I didn't memorize the lay out. From every name on a building to every street name of New York and the surrounding area I know it. If you need to know where the closest McDonald’s is. I'm your girl. So finding one measly house couldn't be that hard. I neared the gated community for the rich and stop just staring at the sheer size of the wall. It seemed like a ten foot high wall. I drove up to the booth with a guy that looked to be fifteen times my size. I put on my sweetest smile hoping I could get by with just that and not have to run away with maybe body parts missing.
"How can I help you?" The man asked me in the gruffest voice I've ever heard in my life. There was no name plate so I came up with a name. I shall dub you Man Bear!!! I almost laughed out loud but then coughed to cover it up wonder what he would do if I laughed.
"Hi, I'm Alice and I came here to see if I could get the spot for a roommate from the ad in the paper." The man bear looked me up and down skeptically and I continued explaining. "Look here's the address from the ad. Now can you open up that monster of a gate?" I asked, my voice dripping with annoyance. What!? The man bear was just staring at me. He reaches over and slams the button without looking. What if that had been my face that came in contact with that fist, not that I would let it.
