~~Nialls POVWhen Monday rolled around, I inconveniently realized that all of my nerve from the weekend didn’t decide to stick around for the actual day. Typical. However, despite my annoying lack of confidence, I still found myself making my way to the bench after the lunch bell rang. My nerves were clamed when Liam smiled brightly as he saw me.

“Nialler!” he exclaimed, “I thought I was going to have to spend another year without the pleasure of your company!” He mock fainted before sitting next to me and wrapping his strong arm around my shoulders. “But seriously are you alright?” He asked with genuine concern apparent on his face. I nodded, “I’ll be fine, thanks Li.”  Liam has always been this way, extremely caring and always an available shoulder to cry on; an attribute of his which I have taken advantage of several times. He’s never quick to judge and always knows when to give me space. Basically, he’s the best, best friend someone could ask for.

A couple minutes into lunch Louis came bounding up the hill with an exasperated Harry in tow. As Lou noticed me his stride became even larger and a screeching “NIALLER!!” left his lips. Harry however kept a perfectly solemn face when he noticed me. So he either genuinely has no opinion on my added presence or he has the greatest poker face I have ever seen.

 Either way, I don’t care.

Liar

Shut up

Lou made his way over to me and engulfed me in a huge hug.

“I can’t believe you had so much homework in the first week of school. Teachers are really assholes! Are you all caught up now though?” He enthusiastically rambled. I could feel Liam trying to control the urge to laugh behind me, so I quickly nodded and reciprocated Lou’s hug so he could turn his attention back to Harry.

While Liam always knows what is going on, Lou is quite different. He’s what some, including myself, would call: completely oblivious. In fact, in all the time I’ve known him I’ve only seen him be serious in a couple of instances in which he absolutely had to be. Other than those select few times, Lou lives his life in a state of blissful ignorance, and that’s okay. I think that’s why I’m so close to them both, they even each other out and in turn keep me grounded. I don’t know what I’d so without them. Well, yeah, I’d probably go on some sort of crazy killing spree, starting with Mr. Harry Hills. Who for some stupid reason decided it would be a great idea to sit right next to me.

He must be daft

I could feel Liam’s amusement seeping out of him, so I figured he realized my feelings towards Harry. I shot him a look that clearly stated ‘thanks for all the compassion’ in the most sarcastic eye voice I have.  Then seriously considering getting up and going to my tree, however that would mean he wins, and I can’t allow that to happen. Even so, I weighed my options carefully in my mind. Yet, before I could decide Harry turned to me and started blabbing.

“Niall, can we talk?” I shook my head no and was about to turn to Liam when Harry surprised me by grabbing my arm pulling me away from the bench. He dragged me with surprising force all the way to the 100’s wing.

“What the hell!” I practically screamed as I pulled my arm aggressively from his tight grip. He looked unbelievable frustrated, almost to the point where I felt bad for him, almost. He let out a long drawn out sigh before speaking.

“Okay, Niall listen, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was a dick, I’m sorry I used gay as an insult, I’m sorry I just forcefully dragged you here, I’m sorry for everything I’ve done that’s rightfully pissed you off, and most of all I’m sorry it seems like I’ve ruined any chance of us being friends. I just really want to be your friend.” He bowed his head obviously waiting for my response. I kind of felt like I was being played, but possibly against my better judgment I ignored the thought; mainly because his intense apology resonated extremely well with me. After all, maybe he was just having a really bad first week; I mean it must suck to change schools just before senior year. I didn’t even really hear him out or anything. With this in mind, I carefully worded out what I wanted to say next.

“Okay Harry, I forgive you. However, you are in a strictly probationary friend zone, understand?” I shot him one of my best Irish smiles when he lifted his head. He nodded quickly in understanding then surprised me by pulling me into one of the strongest, warmest, and best hugs I have ever experienced. Despite my residual hesitance, I hugged him back, his hugging skills were just too good to ignore, plus he smelled ridiculously good.

This boy is just full of surprises isn’t he?

Afterwards, we spend all of our free fifth together talking and laughing.

Who knew such an asshole could be such a nice guy?

By the time sixth period had arrived I had taken quite a liking to him.

You know in the strictly probationary friend sort of way.

Since our econ teacher had still not given us assigned seats, Harry and I sat next to each other and talked continually till the bell rang, signaling the class was starting. When Mr. Connelly stood up from his chair he immediately turned to the white board and started writing ‘Partner Project.’ The entire classroom stirred with excitement and started eyeing the friend they wanted to partner up with.

“Now, Now” Mr. Connelly broke through the commotion with his commanding voice. “Don’t get too excited, you don’t get to choose your partner. Look to the person next to you on the right and say hello to your partner for the next three weeks.”  The class let out this sort of low grumble before a chorus of disgruntled “Hey’s”   resounded through the classroom. I turned to look at Harry who was smirking at me with happiness in his eyes. “Hey partner, I guess it’s a good thing were friends now.” He stated.

“Probationary” I quickly corrected him with a mischievous smirk of my own. His smirk grew into a genuine smile before he replied “Oh, of course, pardon my mistake.” He then started laughing, the most musical and enchanting laugh I ever heard, I tried to disregard it, but it was the type of laugh that wanted to be heard and it kept playing through my head. I sent him a quizzical look and he waved his hand at me in dismissal as he answered my unspoken question.

“It’s just been an interesting day.” I nodded in agreement before turning my attention back to Mr. Connelly.

Yes it has, and I think it’s going to be an even more interesting three weeks.
