My name is Teresa.
I opened my eyes slowly, taking in my surroundings as that single thought crossed my exhausted mind. Above me was a sky of perfect blue, not a wisp of cloud in sight.
A tree was branched out above me, too. Its countless branches were twisted in patterns of shadow that blocked out little sections of blue from my vision of the sky.
The sky and the tree held little of interest, and so I turned to myself. I was lying flat on my back in what seemed to be a small clearing in a forest, staring through the branches of the nearest tree into the sky. I wore a thin layer of metal armor, strong enough to protect me from fatal attacks, but light enough to not slow me down. Fastened around my neck was a plain, red, undecorated cloak, and my long, pink hair spilled over my shoulders in light waves.
In my right hand, I gripped the hilt of a long, silver sword, its simple yet effective blade glinting in the sunlight.
My armor made some quiet clinking sounds as I pushed myself to my feet, and rested my left hand on that tree to steady myself as my vision swam for a moment.
I stuck the point of my sword into the ground and leaned on it as I looked around. Trees… everywhere.
I simply picked a random direction and started to trudge through the forest. My thoughts, on the other hand, were in complete disarray.
Who am I? Why am I here? Why do I only know my name? Am I a knight? Or a mercenary?
Despite thinking all of these things in a wild frenzy inside my head, my face and outward appearance remained perfectly calm. Almost disturbingly so, in fact.
“Hello.” A quiet, feminine voice echoed out from among the trees to my left.
I immediately stopped moving, though not in a startled manner like most would. I calmly turned to face the girl who spoke to me.
She was much shorter than me, and seemingly much younger too. She appeared to be maybe thirteen or fourteen years of age, and her hair was a dark, melancholy blue that was tied into a side ponytail. She was pale, and wore wizard’s robes that were just as deep a blue as her hair. Her eyes remained shadowed by her robe’s hood that was comfortably loose over her head.
“Greetings.” I said the word in a completely neutral voice. “To what do I owe this pleasure, young wizard?”
She smiled towards me. “Are you Teresa?"
I simply nodded in reply.
The girl pulled off her hood, revealing dark blue eyes that matched the rest of her appearance. “My name is Alisa. I awoke here, in these woods, not long ago, armed with only the knowledge of my name and a desire to find a knight by the name of Teresa.” Her smile became wistful. “My past is lost to me, oh knight. Do you have any information that might help me?”
I solemnly shook my head. “Unfortunately, I cannot aid you in this, for I have no memory besides my name either.”
Alisa’s hopeful face sank into disappointment. “Well there goes that. How about we dispose of this formal speech, my friend? We have more chance of figuring things out if we don’t have to speak like we’re talking to a king.” She forced herself to laugh a little.
I smiled. “Indeed,” I said, letting emotion into my voice for the first time since I’d woken up. I extended my hand to the girl. “It’s nice to meet you, Alisa.”
