I decide to take the job of instructor. This way, I can have a job I will enjoy, and be with Tobias. I make my way down to the training room, where the new initiates are supposed to meet at 8:00 am sharp. Their choosing ceremony was yesterday; they've barely had any time to get settled in and become used to Dauntless. I heard there's one girl from Abnegation; that's it. I'm anxious to meet her and see what she's like. Most Abnegation can't hold their own very well, I definitely couldn't last year when I transferred. I stand outside the training room, my hand resting on the steel brass doorknob. I turn the knob, slowly, and peek my head in. All the initiates are standing in a clump in front of Tobias. The squeaking from the door opening has brought all their attention, even Tobias's, to me.

"Hello." I say quietly, closing the door behind me.

"You're late." Tobias says, staring at me. His face is blank and stern. I shiver; this is the exact way he stared at me while I was an initiate.

"I'm sorry." Is all I can say. I would really like to not explain that the reason I'm late is that Christina made me get her breakfast because she didn't want to wait in line.

"Oh, this is Tris. She will also be helping with your training." Tobias says, gesturing to me. I smile and wave at the group of initiates. I hear a boy whisper,

"Well, she'll be a great instructor. Already late on the first day." I hear snickers from the group, and my face blushes with either anger or embarrassment; I can't tell which one. Tobias must have heard them, because he walks towards the boy.

"If you're going to talk about her like that, you'll be on your way to the faction-less compound in a heartbeat." Tobias looks like he's about to explode with anger. The boy, who has short brown hair and hazel eyes, nods in fear.

"Won't happen again, sir." He murmurs. I hear the boy whisper something about Tobias to his friends again, but I purposely don't listen. I don't want to know, nor do I care, at this point. Today the initiates are practicing knife-throwing. I stand by the corner, watching, as the initiates attempt hitting the target. My eyes are immediately drawn to the Abnegation girl. I'm pretty sure her name is Emily. She has no confidence in herself. She is hunched over, and her knifes are hitting the floor.

"Hey, stiff. You know you're supposed to hit the target, right?" The boy who was whispering about me before says. Apparently, his name is Darren, according to his friends. I walk over to Emily and tap her shoulder. She turns around, alarmed, but then relaxes when she sees me.

"Remember, hold your body like this," I show her the proper stance. "And, keep your arms like this when you're throwing." I throw an invisible knife to show her. She nods, looking determined. She throws again, this time the knife not hitting anywhere near the target, but at least it's on the board and not the floor. I hear Darren and his friends snickering.

He's definitely a Peter... I think to myself. I watch Darren throw his knife and hit the center of the target.

"See, Stiff? You better take pointers or you'll never pass initiation." Darren spits, arrogance clouding his expression. Emily is about to answer, but I stop her.

"If I were you, Darren, I wouldn't be so cocky." I stare him straight in the eye, intensely. "Words can destroy a person." At first, he looks surprised that I would challenge him; but then, he just laughs.

"You think you should be giving me pointers? You probably can't even hit the board, let alone the target." Darren's words make my blood boil. Instead of saying anything, I grab the knife from Emily's hand. I throw it at the target, and it sticks perfectly in the middle. Darren stares at it, wide-eyed.

"And, by the way, I was ranked first in my initiation class." Not giving him a chance to respond, I march out the door, feeling all eyes on me.
