Bonnie was a good dog. She slept when she wanted to, and she ate when she was fed. She didn't bark, or pee on the rug, or make a mess.

Emily grew to love Bonnie over the next few weeks, and the new dog even managed to nudge her out of her depression. Soon after getting Bonnie, Emily was far more energetic. She even resumed jogging during her lunch break.

Although Emily still felt a stab of grief in her heart when she thought of Leaf, she had accepted that he was dead. It was natural, she told herself. His time was coming, anyhow.

Bonnie was completely healthy. She didn't have cancer, like Leaf. She didn't even have fleas, although most dogs at the pound did. Emily could count on living a long, happy life with Bonnie.
