Chick chick. She reloaded the gun with skill. This was my chance to move, but I couldn't. I was glued to the spot. They had shown up unexpectedly. I thought I read their every move, but this had surprised me. For some reason I hadn't been able to sense them for a couple of days. Though somehow I knew this day would come. I would stand held at gunpoint praying that I wouldn't meet my fate. But even then, somehow deep down, I had hoped, even believed, that this would blow over but I couldn't be more delusional.
"Any prayers before.... well I'm sure you can guess," said the women, her blonde hair sticking to her sweaty face.
"None at all" I replied snakily.
"You know you could have just married him, I mean, what's wrong with that?" she asked completely changing her approach and surprising me. Most officials don't try to make small talk while holding their victim at gun point.
"Are you trying to distract me?" I asked puzzled by her casualness.
"No, I simply want to know what goes through a sixteen year old spirit bounds head."
This was odd, she just wanted to talk civilly.
"It's not that I'm spirit bound, I just can't stand the council. I think their cruel and treat everyone who doesn't obey them like they're savage animals. There's no way I'd like to be a part of that."
She looked at me like she understood what I was saying. She was obviously lost in thought, this was my chance.
At that moment I kicked the gun out of her hand sharply, catching it as I ran towards the old barn door. I looked back as I ran and smiled. A look of utter surprise flashed over her withering face. She must have thought that I wouldn't try to run. As quick as the expression came, it vanished, only to be replaced with a smirk that made me shiver. As the door came into view, I desperately hoped that I could make a quick getaway. But when I reached to the door, I found it was jammed shut. Maybe this was why she had been so amused. I took a few steps back and lunged towards the door hitting it hard. I heard the hinges groan in protest as the door loosened. I ran out the now open barn door, only to be confronted by a group of officials. And there were not just five officials, but enough to make an entire army, including the battle elephants. I was cornered, but then my fingers touched the cool and smooth in my coat pocket. It was the gun I had stolen from the woman. Unfortunately, it was only shotgun. It was hopeless. I was surrounded like a timid mouse cornered by a clowder of hungry cats. I couldn't escape. Then I remembered my power, how had I forgotten about it. I reached out to the minds, trying to grasp control.
Thunk. Something hit my right thigh causing pain to shoot quickly up my leg. Thunk, thunk. Two more things hit my body. More pain surged from where I'd been hit. Bullets, I thought, no something else, I started to get dizzy I was losing consciousness. No nonooooo my words slurred. Don't let go. Everything was fading. There was no way I could control my power now there was no point. A memory flashed in front of my eyes of when life was normal when I wasn't running. I had always been so excited to turn fifteen to take on my true form but it had only cursed me. Now I was going to die.
