Matt Brody's POV
I was walking along the shore with Summer and wearing my favorite lifeguard hoodie when I saw a sand grifter stealing some cash. I began to sprint towards him roaring.
"Matt!" I heard Summer holler. "Where are you going?" I tackled the sand grifter and yelled at him.
"This is my beach, idiot. Scram!" He looked frightened, and stood up to run away. Summer seemed satisfied with my progress.
"By the way, Matt, I found some dirt on the excessive grifters around lately." That made absolutely no sense to me.
"What are we supposed to do with dirt? Send it to the police as evidence?" Summer laughed, but when I didn't join her she stopped.
"Oh, you're serious? I meant evidence. Bad stuff to say about the grifters." I clapped my hands.
"Nice job!" I slapped her on the back and started to walk closer to her.
"Matt, are you dyslexic?" I shrugged. I honestly didn't know, but mostly cause no one seemed to care. I didn't care either. I was a lifeguard, not a surgeon. Summer patted my back and clasped my hand.
"I'm not drowning." I said. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I wanted her to hold my hand. I just didn't want her to realize that. I mean, I guess it wasn't a secret. We already kissed once.
Summer shrugged and laughed, letting go of my hand and going towards C.J. I watched her leave. Someone whacked my back. It was Mitch. Big surprise.
"Hey princess," I sighed when he called me that. I guess we were back to the nicknames again. He continued. "That," he snarled, gesturing towards me and Summer, "Cannot happen." I glared at him.
"Why not?" If he could play dirty, I could too.
"Well, rookie, you're working together. You'll distract each other. And how unprofessional is it for two coworkers, not to mention who are both working for the elite, dating?" He guffawed, then walked away. But his speech only made me angrier.
I decided to sleep under the pier tonight. I didn't want to see Mitch and his stupid face, or Summer. But Summer came up to me with a sleeping bag. She placed it next to mine.
I smiled. "What's going on?" I patted the sleeping bag, and Summer sat down. I wrapped my arm around her.
"Why aren't you inside today? It's supposed to be cold." I shrugged, not wanting to tell her about me and Mitch's conversation. Summer rubbed her arms, obviously cold. I took off my sweatshirt and offered it to her. She declined.
"Suit yourself." I smugly put the sweatshirt back on, and laid down to sleep. Summer slept next to me.Summer Quinn's P.O.V.
When I woke up, Brody was gone. I was wearing his sweatshirt though, and once I sat up I saw him, shirtless, doing pushups. There were bruises and scratches along his chest.
"What happened to you?" He looked down to his chest and shrugged.
"I tripped earlier when jogging, and the boardwalk beat me in battle." Brody jumped up and started towards me. I held my hands up, keeping a necessary distance between us.
"You're lying," I accused him. He shook his head, causing his fluffy hair to shake. "Your eyes crinkle at the edges whenever you lie." He stared at the floor, suddenly shy.
"I took a dyslexia test earlier in the morning."he mumbled. "It came back positive." I wasn't honestly surprised, and no one would be except Brody. But I was still confused.
"So why the bruises and scratches?" Brody looked at his chest again, and this time traced a few scratches with his fingers.
"I got mad at myself for not realizing," he muttered. "I got so mad that I was distracted and crashed into a pole." I stifled a giggle.
"It was a hard test, Summer. I never had a great education, so I'm stupid. They asked me hard math problems and riddles. I felt like an idiot." I felt embarrassed for almost laughing. I imagined the pretty, cocky Brody strolling down a street, head down, tears rolling down his face. Tears were rolling down his face now. I placed my hand on his cheek, wiping away the tears. He sniffled, and sat down. Brody seemed so innocent for a moment, like a baby deer. It was pretty adorable.
I sat down next to him and grabbed his hand. Brody moved his hand away, stood back up, and starting walking towards the town.
"I can't right now," he cried. "I just can't." I finally believed him when he first told Mitch that he was fast. He used his strong, fast legs to grab his bag and sprint away.
