Brooke
I crossed out another job advertisement with a deep sigh. It was for a nursery school teacher. But, when I called the school, they said I was too late and they already got a teacher for a post an hour ago.
I must be disappointed, right? But, no. It's doesn't affect me anymore. I've digested more than 15 rejections like this in these two months ever since the Golden Valley School decided to oust itself off the city. I worked as a high school English teacher for two years in the institution and yes, it paid me enough to meet the needs of my siblings Chris and Nora.
Chris was 13 years old and wanted to pursue a career in Computer Engineering while Nora was 10 and had barely any idea about how difficult it had become to deposit her tuition fees at the end of month for last two months. Quite honestly, I'm glad she was in oblivion. I don't want her to feel even a little bit of impoverished in her golden childhood. I want her and Chris to be happy and shining like any other child of their age, never making them recall that they lost their parents four years ago in that massive car accident.
My heart clenched as I remembered the good old days...me, mom, dad, Chris and Nora. And suddenly, it was all dark.
I wiped my tears and adjusted my glasses on my nose as I folded the newspaper back, only to see a glistening Chris looking at me keenly.
'This one's slipped too, right?' he asked. I know he knew but I showed not.
I smiled ruffling his head.
'Don't worry Chris. It was a small job and I'm sure they won't pay me much for that. And I hope things went this way for better. I'll get a real good job soon, you'll see.' I said showing my ever active optimism.
But, that could barely impress my little brother.
'You'd always keep it on your hope, wouldn't you?' he said with that bleak hopeless face.
I knew my brother was smarter than his age.
I smiled and leaned towards him.
'It's hope that lets us live Chris and it's trust that leads your hope.' I said. He blinked twice, not knowing what to say.
'Now don't worry about that and go help Nora with her Computer homeworks.' I said in an encouraging tone pushing him towards Nora's room.
Chris looked at me blank and left.
I took a deep breath. I succeeded again in convincing a vague thing to both me and Chris. I do it pretty well but I guess the harshness of life can't be escaped for long. Nora's exams were around the corner and the tuition fees are to be deposited soon.
I took out my purse from the drawer of my table. 30 dollars, that was it.
A drop of tear escaped my left eye. But, no. I won't loose hope. I will manage to find something or the other. Yes, I know I will.
Just then my phone rang. I smiled as I saw who it was. Miss Caroline, one of my closest associates in Golden Valley School. I received the call.
Brooke: Hello Caroline. How're you doing?
Caroline: Hello Brooke! (smiles). I'm fine dear. What about you? And Nora and Chris?
B : (sighs) Everyone's fine Caroline.
C : And did you get a job?
B : Nope. Not yet but I hope something's gonna turn up soon.
C : Mhhhhmmm..in that case, may be I can help you a bit.
B : What do you mean?
