Kanda looked down at the sleeping male in his arms. A frown found its way onto his face as he thought about all the pain Allen has gone through. Kanda's blood boiled at the thought of Cross having no remorse for hurting the smaller, younger male just for sport. Granted, he was not a people person himself, but he did believe in justified punishment; the way Cross treated Allen was anything but justified and would forever remain that way. Kanda was gentle when he ran his fingers through the snowy hair that was resting against his chest. Kanda tightened his grip on the smaller male as he shifted to be comfortable while sitting.
He rested his chin on top of Allen's head and stared at the wall across from them before he started dozing off. Navy eyes were persistent in their denial of sleep, refusing to lose sight before confirming that immediate threats were neutralized. The call of unconsciousness was too strong to continue denying as his eyes lost their battle and fell closed. His tail joined his arms around the younger's waist as he fell asleep, midnight ears still perked up in high alert. It took a period of thirty minutes in which Kanda was still waking up off and on, paranoid that he would miss when Cross returned and would fail to protect Allen again, but soon enough he was in sound sleep.
It was early the next morning when Kanda woke up due to the other male moving closer. Allen was shaking in his sleep, as if having a nightmare. Soft whimpers fell from the albino's throat to which the shifter responded by running his fingers through the white hair with a gentle caress. The sounds died down, allowing Kanda to release a soft sigh that he did not realize he had even been holding in.
Navy eyes were swift to open once he caught the sound of footsteps coming from down the hallway. The noise caused him to tighten his grip on the albino, his hold on the teenager was rather protective . He tensed up more with each footfall that brought the other being closer to the bedroom door. Midnight ears lowered against his head in anger and a growl rumbled deep in his chest. The male only relaxed once the stumbling footsteps of the drunken redhead faded away. His shoulders deflated, but only slightly seeing as how he was never one to show his emotions.
The male gave a quiet, annoyed huff, wondering why he was so worked up about keeping the smaller male safe. It was not as if they had been friends for a while, not that Kanda had any of those anyway. Not that he did not want any, though he would not admit it. Kanda had a hard time trusting or staying with someone long enough to make a friend out of them. Last time had ended up in him becoming a street cat that was at the mercy of the elements and any other creatures that called the streets home.
The shifter busied himself with watching out the window, eyes tracing invisible lines in the sky to connect the fading stars. The clock had read seven forty-five when his eyes first laid claim to the digital numbers, it now read seven fifty-six. Royal purple gave way to pastel pink, scarlet, gold, lavender, and periwinkle as the sky woke up. Sunlight broke through the clouds and cast thin rays through the window, warming patches of skin. As the minutes passed, the rays grew in size and the sky's color lost its variation until it was a solid cobalt blue.
Kanda glanced down at the other, feeling the smaller male stir. Allen's eyes were slow to flutter open, revealing their blue-grey colour, though they were glossy, as if about to shed tears. Almost immediately he wiped at his eyes before glancing up at the stronger male with a smile that did not quite reach his eyes, "Morning Kanda," Allen greeted, his voice quiet and raspy due to the crying and the pain filled screaming the day before. Being so used to hiding how he felt, Allen was a natural when it came to plastering a false smile on his face. If asked if he was fine, Allen would immediately respond that he was okay and no one needed to worry about him - not that anyone did anyway, that he knows of. It was just a skill he had developed over time in response to being asked about his almost permanent bruise littered skin.
"Drop the fake smile Moyashi," the shifter stated bluntly with a scowl and light glare before following his statement with a question, preventing the other from defending himself, "Did you know you move around quite a bit in your sleep?"
By this time Kanda was just trying to convince himself that the albino brought nothing but trouble and problems, hoping to prevent the subtle thudding of his heart from gaining speed. Not that he was expecting an answer, considering he could most likely guess why Allen moved around so much, but he felt as if he should voice the invading question anyway, having learned that the more you know about someone made it easier to take them down in the long run when they betrayed you. A few seconds later he was brought out of his thoughts by the white haired male, who solemnly nodded and looked down, "It has to do with my night terrors," the beansprout replied, shuddering as pain filled memories and nightmares plagued his mind with chaotic darkness. Allen was quick to shake his head to get rid of the ominous thoughts that were threatening him to the point of a panic attack.
Kanda gave the white hair a light ruffle as, heaven forbid, a silent apology. Not that he would admit it, but he did feel guilty about bringing up, what he assumed to be, painful thoughts. He produced an annoyed sound and looked to the side, his eyes closing once more as he delved into his thoughts, trying to come up with a way he could make it up the other male. Kanda, having been devoted to his thoughts, did not notice the other male worm out of his arms and stand up.
"Would you like something to eat?" he asked the shifter, with his usual soft and polite tone, which was his default tone of voice.
Allen watched the Oriental male blink his eyes open and look over as he returned to planet reality. Kanda's head gained a slight tilt to the side, an ear shifting to look like it was out to the side and accentuating how obvious it was that he was only part human, as he proccessed the question. Allen stifled a light giggle, although the other had a pretty foul attitude, Kanda still managed to look adorable when confused or when processing information. Allen watched the slow pink hue appear on Kanda's pale cheeks. The shifter shot the albino a light glare as he produced an awkward cough in an attempt to try and cover up his embarrassment . His actions caused the snowy haired male to go into a full blown laugh; Allen watched the stoic male's lips twitch upward in a slight smile.
Not that Kanda would admit it, but hearing the other's laugh made his heart swell with an unknown feeling, one that was warm, one that he had not felt in many years. Almost immediately, Kanda forced the feeling to go away as he re-locked the gate to his emotions. Kanda reached up, and with a gentle forcefulness pulled Allen back into his lap with a cocky grin; a dark blush bloomed on Allen's face, causing the older male to smirk.
In his peripheral vision Allen saw Kanda smirk and blushed darker while he used his hands to cover his ever reddening face. His thoughts suddenly raced with images of the shifter, thoughts of the first time Allen saw him in human form, thoughts of how graceful his movements are, thoughts of his almost god-like appearance, down to thoughts about his horrible, yet attractive personality.
Kanda chuckled softly to himself as he watched the boy get more and more flustered. The word cute came to mind as he tried to figure out a word to describe Allen. Not that he would ever admit it, but it was painfully obvious the shifter started to develop feelings for the snowy haired male; both males were oblivious to the show of feelings towards each other, that could resemble anything more than just acquaintances that happened to protect one another, but not friends. Not even close to friends, and definitely not friends with romance.
