Prologue
Tyrannia looked out the window at the pouring rain, thinking about the day before this. She had the lead in a play at school, she had a perfect boyfriend that she'd been with for a year, and she hadn't been Tyrannia. She'd been Lily Chandler; sophomore in high school, a NORMAL high school...and tomorrow they expected her to go to some school for the 'magically inclined.'
She had no idea why they chose her of all people, none whatsoever. She had never even experimented with magic...not even cards. But for some reason they had, and she was here. In this room with plain, beige walls, and a dark grey carpet that felt almost as hard as cement, and a mattress that was almost like a rock, and a pillow that was worse. The blanket was itchy wool, grey like the carpet, and the sheet below was a cream/off white tone. The only light filtering in was from the moon outside, peeking in through old wooden shades. There was however an old wooden table next to the bed, a few empty drawers, and a lamp with a dim bulb in it, no shade, just the lightbulb.
Even now, looking out the dust-caked window, she racked her brain for an answer. Maybe they had a mix up, maybe this was a big prank...maybe...
A sudden sharp pain ran through her arm, centering at the middle of her wrist, a choked scream escaped her lips as she fell in a lump to the rock-hard mattress below her, her eyes fluttering closed, and the last thing she thought of being the mind-numbing pain, almost feeling as if it reached her core.
