Chapter 33
It took no time at all for Mitch to get back to Rebeca's house. He ran up to the front door. Which looked like it had been kicked in. Whoever did it must have been really strong. Mitch wasn't sure if he could kick down that door. He took a step inside.
There was definitely a struggle. The first thing Mitch noticed was the smell, blood and not just a little. It looked that whoever was in the living room was putting things back in order when the intruder bust through the door as some of the furniture had been put back into place before the struggle. Mitch followed the blood trail up the stairs. He saw that there was a struggle up here too, cracks in the walls as well as fist sized holes attested to that. The blood trailed led to Rebeca's room. Mitch paled a bit before walking into the room. He saw that it was in shambles, her desk broken, her bedroom was in real bad shape. There was cracks in the wall but the real thing dominating the room was the body in the center of the room. Mitch rushed over to her.
"Rosa? wake up," Mitch said, checking her pulse, it was weak.
"Rosa!" Mitch cried and started slapping her face lightly. She coughed up blood and opened her eyes. Luckily Mitch had fed real recently or he might not have been able to keep his composure, seeing how Rosa was covered in blood.
"2 Attackers..." She trailed.
"One went through the front door and the other went through the window," She said, trying to speak quickly.
'I drove the one in the front room off but the one in this room ambushed me... Got me good.." She explained.
"I've got to get you to a hospital," Mitch told her and was about to pick her up but she protested.
"No... It's too late for me," She said and pulled out a bloodstained phone.
"Call Selena and tell her Rebeca, Anna and Thomas has been taken. Then find her Mitch," She said, looking into his eyes.
"Find her, save her and her family, and punish those responsible," Rosa said, the fire in her eyes leaving them and she let one one final breath and died in front of him.Mitch took a few seconds to try and collect himself but gave up when it failed and took Rosa's phone and found Selena's name in her contacts list and called the number.
"Hello? Rosa?" Mitch heard Selena's voice on the other end.
"Selena, its Mitch," He responded.
"Mitch... Where is Rosa?" she asked, her voice laced with suspicion.
"There has been an attack. Rosa... is dead. Thomas, Anna and Rebeca have been taken and I have a very good idea of who did it and where to find them," Mitch told her.
"Who?" She asked, he could almost feel the heat in her voice.
"Some kindred. I think they aren't tied to anyone,"Mitch told her.
"How do you know... Nevermind. Find my family and bring them back. Family is the most important thing to me. If you can retrieve them safely. I will owe you a huge favor," She promised.
'I will get them back," He told her and she hung up. Mitch could only imagine what was going through Selena's head right now but he decided not to dwell on it. All he cared about was Rebeca and her family. She was not going to go through what he had to if he could help it. He ran out to his car and his phone went off before he started the car. The ID said Melissa.
"If you knew what was going to happen Melissa I will..." Mitch started.
"If I knew Nathan was going to go after Rebeca tonight I would've told you. Especially after you broke his compulsion," Melissa interrupted him and she made a good point.
"I'm coming over," He told her.
"Ok, can you fix up my brother first? He was messed up pretty bad by Rebeca's guard. He won't be able to stop you even if he could," She pleaded. Mitch paused for a moment before answering.
"Ok. I'll help your brother before going after Nathan but I expect you to be there with me," Mitch told Melissa.
"Done," She replied.
"I'll be there in 5 minutes," Mitch told her.
"You shouldn't have to worry about attracting attention. Nathan is in the basement with Rebeca and her parents and the basement is sound proof so no sound in or out but just be safe go though the only open window on the side of the house, it'll be where Erin and I will be," She told him before hanging up.Mitch gripped the steering wheel tight and eased up his grip, sure he was going to bend it if he let his anger get a hold of him. He tried to control his breathing but failed. He was livid, he was so angry he could see red at the edges of his vision.
Calm yourself Mitch. You are going to hurt yourself. Mitch warned him... That was odd. Aren't you suppose to be the manifestation of my base desires?
Yes. It is strange. I could hijack your body, your control and take you for a joyride if I wanted to right now but...We are more effective together. Working together, Man and Beast rather than one overriding the other, Michel explained. Mitch could feel he was right... not only were they more effective but it just felt... right... to work together. With Michel's help he was able to control his breathing and he wasn't seeing red when he did see Nathan's house. He drove past and parked a block away and double backed on foot. Silent and quick as he could searching for the open window. It was on the second floor of the house that was nearly as big as Rebeca's. It was not nearly as well maintained though, the grass was a bit high, the tree in the front yard's branches almost reached the house. The paint was cracked and flaking in places and the house in general looked in bad shape.
*They probably have not lived there long and don't plan on staying... Squatters?* Michel commented. Mitch agreed but what was their plan? Why do this? This question had been banging around Mitch's head since this morning. What was the point of all this? Mitch was determined to get some answers out of Nathan before Mitch killed him. Anger boiled up in him, white hot like a forge and Mitch worked hard to suppress it. Anger has it's place and time but not now Michel reminded him. Mitch nodded to himself, agreeing. Mitch crept up to the side of the house and jumped from a stand still and got about 5 feet up, luckily the wood gave way to his claws but without a lot of noise and Mitch slowly made his way up to the open window.Mitch popped his head up to the window. The room was painted white, the walls were fairly smooth. The only furniture in the room was a china cabinet with medical supplies, a chair next to a single bed. Melissa was sitting in the chair and Erin was in the bed. His eyes closed. Mitch pushed himself up and into the room and Melissa looked up at the commotion and stood up.
"Mitch," She said as he got up.
"Melissa," He responded.
"Your really quiet," She commented.
"Thanks. How is he?" Mitch nodded over to Erin.
"Stable. I've gone what I can but he'll be up and walking in a week or two," Mitch nodded.
"What kind of injuries does he have?" Mitch asked.
"Multiple cuts and bruises, some deep, most not. Broken arm, couple broken ribs and his left arm's bone was bruised," She explained and Mitch's jaw dropped.
"A couple weeks? You mean like 6 months right?" Mitch asked and Melissa smiled.
"Nope, us Kindred, we can take a beating and come back quickly. We can recover from just about any wound save losing a limb and we have a supernaturally quick recovery," She explained.
"Wow... so... If I wanted to put Nathan out..." He trailed.
"You'd have to put him down," Melissa finished. Mitch nodded before walking over to Erin. To Mitch's surprise he opened his eyes. They were a deep brown, and he superficially looked like Melissa. He lifted one of his arms and Melissa pushed his arm down.
"Be calm brother. Mitch is going to help you," Melissa told her brother.
"What?... Enemy..." Erin trailed. Nathan's compulsion must be strong.
"Erin.. Look in my eyes. I will free you," Mitch commanded and Mitch could see reluctance and surprise in his eyes when he did as Mitch commanded.Mitch wandered into Erin's mind and set about his task of breaking Nathan's compulsion on Erin. Mitch was again guided by Michel's instincts and the process was slow, it had been slow with Melissa as well but the compulsion was strong and ever present in Erin's mind. IT took almost 20 minutes before Mitch finally withdrew and took a step back as well as a breath.
"Done. He is free," Mitch said.
"Good," Melissa said.
"Are you ready Mitch?" Melissa asked and the anger came back, sensing it's time was near.
"Yes."
