"Oh, come on, seriously?" you complain as your friend grabs your hand eagerly, pulling you away from the sandwich that you were about to take a bite out of.

"Yes seriously!" Jessica exclaims, "The Battle of the Bands only happens today and then that's it! You can take your lunch with you into the gym, okay? You can even stand in the back and eat while I watch them play, please?!"

You sigh, but toss your sandwich back into your lunch kit all the same, letting her haul you up from against the lockers where you're sitting on the floor. "Fine!" you give, "But only because I know that one of the drummers in one of the bands performing is, like, super hot, so."

"See! We both win," she laughs, dragging you towards the gym where you can already hear loud thumping music - though it just sounds like the warm up, so you're pretty sure she won't get mad at you for making her miss anything.

"I mean, aren't you only going to this because the lead singer in... what band was it again?"

"Disco Pups!" she grins, and you roll your eyes. What a name.

"Right, yeah, the lead singer in Disco Pups is super cute, and that's why you're so interested," you say as you push open the door into the gym, the blasting music increasing tenfold as you step onto the gym floor.

"Can you blame me?!" Jessica shouts over the music as she scans the crowd, searching for a sign of any band members milling around.

"He's not gonna be out here!" you yell at her, punching her shoulder to bring her attention back to you, "The bands are all probably in the band room or setting up backstage. Who's playing first anyway? More accurately, how long do I have to stay here and watch this mess with you?"

"Um. I'm not sure! I think I saw a list of the bands taped up somewhere, c'mon," she says, leading you towards the back of the gym, where it's a little easier to hear yourself think. "Yeah," she taps the concrete wall where a flyer promoting the "Battle of the Bands" is posted. She runs a finger down the list of names, "Disco Pups aren't until the end."

"Fuck," you groan, "So I have to eat my lunch while listening to all of this shit?"

"C'mon, why d'you gotta be like that all the time Rae?" Jessica complains, "These guys have been working hard, can't you just be a little appreciative?"

You shrug, "I'll be able to hear 'em alright," you tell her with an eye roll. "Looks like they're starting - do you want to hang out back here with me until your crush plays or will I find you by the stage later?"

Jessica looks at you for a long moment before sighing slightly. "Nah, I'll stay back here with you, we can see the stage just fine. But when Disco Pups are up, I'm getting up there whether you're done your lunch or not!"

"Sounds just fine to me," you tell her with a shrug, opening up your lunch kit again and leaning against the wall. She spares one eye roll at you before reaching into your bag and stealing a handful of your pretzels. You open your mouth pointedly and she feeds you a couple sticks in response.

"Gay!" some dude screams at you as he shoulders past you on his way towards the stage.

"You fucking know it!" you yell back at him, though your ire is slightly marred through your mouthful of pretzels. "Idiot," you mutter in Jessica's ear.

Jessica turns to you, a sympathetic expression starting to crawl across her face, but you just punch her shoulder lightly. "It's chill," you tell her, "You know I'm done hiding by now. I don't really care what anyone else thinks anymore."

Jessica starts to reply, but the music teacher steps up on stage and introduces the first band in his typical cartoon-y, over-the-top kind of way. "Let the battle.... begin!!" Mr. K shouts, before stepping back and letting the first group - you hadn't bothered to remember their name and you certainly can't hear their introduction over the way the guitarist is already going nuts - take the stage.
