The roar of Scott's bike stopped as he hit the brake and cut the motor. After putting the kickstand down and hopping off, he stared at the gated entrance of Oak Creek once again. He's been coming here in the middle of the night, while the rest of the town slept, for the past four nights. Every detail's been etched into his brain. The rusty iron gates, the ivy and overgrown landscape, the screech as the gate gets pushed open, the bright yellow crime scene tape that contrasted against the darkness of everything else. This place that had been mostly forgotten about would now forever be engrained in him and his friends.
He stepped over the crime scene tape and through the entry gate, flashes of that night hitting him like a runaway freight train. The Nogitsune had Lydia, so the mission was to save her. He'd ran through the tunnels with Stiles to find her while the rest of the pack took on the Oni. He should have stayed back. He should have stayed with Allison and let someone else go with Stiles to rescue Lydia.
That night, that decision, will haunt Scott for the rest of his life. He can still hear the clacking of the swords and the pluck of Allison's bow. He'd kept his hearing zeroed in on what was going on outside just in case anything went wrong. Then Lydia frantically said they weren't supposed to be there, asking them if they got her message and who came with them. His heart pounded in his ears as he raced back down the tunnels to get to the others. All he could think about was Lydia saying they weren't supposed to be there and how that could only mean one thing. Someone was going to die.
He'd stayed focused on all the noises and heartbeats of his friends outside. He felt Isaac's pain, heard Allison's bow being plucked, followed by the sound of a sword going through someone just as he made it back out. Lydia screamed Allison's name from inside the tunnels behind him. No, he thought to himself. He looked around at everyone who had stopped what they were doing to watch what was happening in horror. He followed their shocked gazes. Then his eyes landed on her and he raced to her before she fell to the ground.
As Scott sits in the same spot where he last held Allison, he can still feel the weight of her limp body in his arms. He can still feel the heartache at not being able to take her pain as she said "it's okay. It doesn't hurt." Her voice still echoes as she tells him she's in the arms of the one she'll always love, her first love. He can still hear her last heartbeat as her hand fell to the ground.
These images and these sounds will stay with him forever. When he, Stiles, and Allison sacrificed themselves to save their parents, Deaton warned them that there will always be a darkness around their heart. Now there's a new darkness surrounding his. It's more like a deep and dark void in his heart.
Scott ran his hand over the asphalt in front of him that was still stained with Allison's blood. "I didn't get to say it back..." He whispered to the darkness.
Suddenly, a different feeling washed over him that caused him to suck in a deep breath and slowly release it. He swore he could feel her presence with him in that moment as he felt more relaxed and at ease. He looked around, confused at the sudden feeling, and hoping against hope that maybe, somehow, she was really with him.
Then, he felt her hand on his shoulder, instantly causing him to turn around. His breath hitched at the sight of her smile. "Hi."
"Allison?" Scott barely mumbled.
"It's really me." Allison answered with a small smile as tears formed behind her eyes.
Scott quickly got to his feet and pulled her into a tight embrace. "I can't believe it's you. I can't believe I'm holding you again," he whispered into her hair. "You're... I... How is this even possible?" He questioned as he pulled back a little and surveyed her.
She was still wearing the same clothes from that night, but thankfully not stained in blood. There was also a glow around her, signaling to Scott that this isn't as real as he wished it was. She was still gone. This was something of a higher power, or a supernatural mystery. He didn't care, though. All that mattered was that she was here, in the flesh, in his arms again.
