The Changing{put on hold}

Chapter 6

Skylar POV:

I feel the tears cascading down my cheeks as we embrace. I feel so bad about bringing up bad memories for him.

I shudder at the thought.

We are pulled from our thoughts as the door slowly opens a crack. Demetri releases me from his grasp but I dont stray far.

We are faced instantly by his mother. I feel Demetri tense up next to me so I grab his hand and squeeze it, wrapping my fingers around his own.

Demetri's POV:

I tense at the presence of my mother, but calm as Sky holds my hand. My mother looks down at our connection briefly before going on with what she came in here for.

"Dinners ready hun"

"Sky already ate... Dinner is pointless" I say.

"Just try please?" my mom says with a tight lipped smile.

"We're coming mom" I say, choking back a sigh.

With that she turns and leaves downstairs. I turn to Sky and she leads me down stairs after my mother.

At the dinner table I sit next to Sky and Jena. During the dinner my mom breaks the silence.

"So Sky, Have you gotten a response back from your application?"

I drop my fork and go pale for a second before hearing Sky answer.

"Yes, I have actually! I had my training today"

"Oh good! I really hope you get the job Skylar, the benefits surely do help families out."

I turn red at my mothers obvious hinting but I'm happy that Skylar is completely oblivious.

"I know, hopefully I can get extra benefits to help you all out as well"

I take that statement as my turn to speak. "Oh no Sky, this is my family and its my duty to keep them safe"

"But if they give them to me" Skylar starts to say.

"Demetri! Skylar is being kind enough to share her immunity with us and you are turning it down?"

"Mother! It isn't ours to take!"

Skylar's POV:

With that statement I feel uncomfortable. I dont understand why he is throwing a fit. If I have the opportunity to save his family from getting punishments than I will, no questions asked.

I look up to his mother and find her completely flabbergasted. I look over to Jena and make faces to ease the tension.

Without warning his mother stands up and walks out of the room. Jena immediately goes in to follow her mommy and that leaves me and Demetri alone at the table.

"That was complete and utter bullshit Sky"

I gasp at his attitude towards the situation and respond back. "You should go talk to her".

Before he could answer Jena comes running down the stairs like she's seen a ghost. She runs to her brother and whispers in his ear.

Demetri's POV:

Jena comes barreling down the stairs, saving me from blowing up. She climbs onto my lap and whispers "Its happening again De".

I stare ahead mortified at what is happening upstairs.

"What's goin' on?" Sky says curiously.

"Sky go home" I say emotionlessly.

Skylar's POV:

I look at my best friend, shocked that he said that to me.

"Wha-"

"Please just go" Demetri pleads with his sister clinging to him.

I nod weakly and stand. I start to pick up my plate but set it back down when I hear Jena whisper "she needs to go faster".

I walk calmly over to the door and open it. Making eye contact with Demetri I say clearly "I will be here tomorrow" and walk out the door.

I close the door and stay pressed against it. I hear thuds that sound like footsteps on stairs and with that I start the trek back to my house.

On the way back I realize how screwed I am.
