oh hey look, finally a chapter!

the air was oddly frigid for the summer morning. goosebumps began to form on my legs as i walked the sidewalk to school. i had my cassette in my hands listening to waterloo sunset by the kinks. i sat with my mother, along with beverly, putting a playlist of my favorite songs together at the beginning on the month.

the cold breeze blew my brown hair back. as an act of curiosity i chopped my hair, that reached my butt, up to my shoulders. i wanted to know what i would look like with short hair. turns out it's good.

another gush of wind whipped onto my face. my cheeks flushed and my green eyes prickled with tears. god why is it so cold in the morning, it's summer! well technically.

it was the last day of school and i just wanted it to be over with. the only reason i am actually going to school today, instead of ditching is because of my best friend. beverly marsh.
i've known that little geek since diapers. the both of us grew up next to each other in our apartment complex. we've been through everything together.

the worst we have been through together was her mother's death. elfrida fell with fatal cancer. beverly was devestated. along with her mother's death brought many different, new problems for the poor girl.
before the death, beverly's dad would drink only at night. now he is downing multiple drinks a night to cope with everything. it's been years.

to release the anger and stress of multiple things piling up onto him, he began to hit beverly. she didn't even try to hide it from me. the first night he had laid a hand on her beverly wept herself to sleep and went straight to my house in the morning, after her father had badgered her about acting out and made her apologize.
she lay in my arms for hours. that was only a summer ago.

we are creeping up on summer break by each hour. only 7 to go precisely until our break officially starts, yet again. beverly and i plan on not doing absolutely anything this summer. i'm in trouble because i stayed out past the towns curfew and beverly has to run everything by her shit dad before doing anything, and he never says yes to anything fun. the scare of kids going missing also has put a few events on hold. although, bev has been sneaking out while he's asleep from his drunkenness taking over, and she also gets out while he's at work.

arriving at school, i pass the
"DERRY POLICE DEPT
REMEMBER
THE
CURFEW
7 P.M."
sign, rolling my eyes. the curfew was just inconvenient. kids are going missing, yes, but maybe if the cops did their jobs we wouldn't be having this problem. whatever creep is taking, sometimes murdering children and adults is utterly disgusting. i only wish whoever it is, is caught soon.
beverly and i have put the buddy system to use because of the news. whenever we want to go anywhere either of us has to go with the other, no matter what.
plenty of adventures because of me. plenty of thrilling experiences because of her.

walking up the stairs to the front door, i feel hands fall onto my shoulders abruptly, "boo!" i turned to see who decided to annoy me this early in the morning. the sight in front of my eyes is long, fiery red hair in a side pony tail, held by an elastic, hanging loosely on her shoulders, bright blue eyes, pale skin, and beautiful freckles sprinkling her nose and cheeks. "ahhhh" i feigned sarcastically, "so scared." beverly shoved my shoulder softly, "oh hush".

"hey where were ya this morning, i waited but got lazy and just left" i asked. she gave me the look. the look usually means she's gotten her period, or something happened with her dad. am going to go with her dad. he most likely saw her this morning, hounded her with questions, threatening her with beatings if she talks to boys, and she probably used me waiting for her as an excuse to leave earlier. i don't blame her.

she gave me a funny face and i stared blankly at her. "oh bells, so naive" "how am i naive? i am doing absolutely nothing. barely breathing. and it's bella, genius"
"it's actually isabella. forget your own name, isabella? huh, genius?"
"i have never hated you more in my entire life, i just want you to remember this moment the next time i give you the silent treatment." finishing my statement i looked down at the ground, starting to walk to the front doors yet again, snorting. bev threw her head back letting out one tiny laugh before catching up to my pace.
