~  "Never regret thy fall,Oh Icarus of the fearless flightFor the greatest tragedy of them allIs never to feel the burning light" ~

His Great Flight-Icarus fastened the leather straps onto his forearms, securing wings onto his body. Joining his father at the edge of the cliff, he stared at the crashing waves below."Today we fly like the gods." Daedalus murmured.

 "This is madness!" Icarus scoffed,

 "We will surely perish!"

"We're dead anyways." The elder met his gaze.

"But if this be our end, I want History to remember such an end!" A gust of wind blew over them, tugging at their feathers.

Eager, Daedalus said, "It is time!" They lifted their wings.

"You there! Halt!" A voice cried.

The two turned to see soldiers. Raising their weapons, they approached the two.

"By order of King Minos, you are under arrest!"

 "We're too late!" Icarus cried.

"No we're not." Daedalus said,

"Follow me." With that, the elder stepped off the edge.

The soldiers cried out in surprise."Father!"

But as fast as he fell, the old man elevated into the air.

 The soldiers gasped, "Impossible!"

 "Come Icarus!" Daedalus called.

Hesitant, Icarus obeyed.
Leaping into the air, he spread his wings. He started shaky, like a hatchling taking his first flight, but then he glided comfortably.

"The gods are helping them!" The soldiers cried.

"Uranus!" one cried, "God of the heavens! Take us as well!"

Icarus laughed, "You fools! You'll never catch me!"
But the lad then realized he was sinking towards the ocean.

The waves threatened to weigh him down.
 "Father!"

"Flap your wings, Icarus!" Daedalus called from above.

"Just as I taught you!"The lad obeyed and floated up, joining his father.

Adjusting to the wind, Icarus felt like an eagle soaring where no man has gone before! He almost felt immortal! Gazing up at the clouds, he cried, "Father, look! That's where the gods live!"

Beating his wings, he ascended. "Let's go meet them!"

"Icarus don't!" Daedalus cried.

"If you fly too high the sun will destroy your wings!"

His son didn't didn't hear him. Pumping his strong arms, he approached the clouds.

"Icarus!" His father cried

. "I beg you! Come back!"But the lad entered into the clouds.

"Icarus!"

Submerging through the white mist, Icarus gazed at the sea of clouds in awe. He soared over them and searched for the gods. "Aphrodite!" He called.

"Goddess of love! Let me see your face!" Far from the ocean's reach, he felt free to swoop anyway he pleased. But he failed to see feathers slipping from his wings.

"Oh great gods!" He called. "Show yourselves!" But there was no answer. Confused, Icarus suddenly grew tired.

 "Aethar!" He gasped.

"God of air and light! Lend me your wind!" But the air was shallow, not generous like it once was... Panting uncontrollably, he rasped,

"Where- Where are they?" The thrill left him, and Icarus realized his wings were falling apart! Alarmed, he desperately flapped, but he fell through the clouds.

He tried to glide like before, but the sun had melted holes into his wings. As he fell for the ocean below, he screamed for the gods. But it was futile... He was alone.

 "Father!" he sobbed,

"Father, save me!"

"Son!" Daedalus called,

"Level your wings!"

"I can't!" His father appeared above him.

Swooping after him, Daedalus reached, "Take my hand!"

But they were too far apart. Icarus realized that there was nothing his father could do.
This was his end... He could see the waves thrashing below. Poseidon, the god of the sea, seemed to welcome him, promising to kill him swiftly. Accepting his fate, he called,
"I'm sorry, father! I'm so-"

"ICARUS!" Deadalus cried.

"NO!" But the ocean kept its promise... Icarus, son of Daedalus, was no more... Daedalus was devastated. He nearly dropped his wings to join him... But instead he carried on... He chose to have a different end... He had more to accomplish before History would remember him... But for Icarus, though his foolish choice ended his life... We now remember him for his Great Flight...... History now remembers him for such an end!
