Not A Monster

Robert shoved you behind him protectively and you were happy to cower behind him. The creature let out a low growl from the bushes and pounced out at you! Was this the end? No!

Wait.

That's no monster.

That was...

Duchess Cordelia?

You crept out from behind Robert who stared at the dog in shock. At last, he spoke, "What's a dog doing out here?"

"That's Duchess Cordelia," you said incredulously, "I remember I had to chase her down once with Damien. And then she was adopted by Hugo."

Robert raised an eyebrow at you, "That's quite the story but how did she get out of Hugo's house?"

"She can open looks," you explained.

"She can open locks?"

Robert didn't look like he quite believed you but you nodded, "I'm afraid so."

"Well, we better get her home," Robert said at last. Duchess Cordelia barked happily and looked at the two of us. "Alright, Duchess, come here." Robert made to grab her but she bounded out of the way.

"Here, let me try." You creep forward much slower and hold your hand out in front of you, "Hey there Duchess, let's home alright?" Duchess tilted her head and sniffed at your hand before pouncing at you, nearly knocking you down again.

Robert shook his head sheepishly, "Guess I'm too used to working with Betsy."

You smiled at him, "Well I gotta be good at something, right?"

Together the two of you managed to lead Duchess Cordelia out of the forest. After some brainstorming about what to do with the motorcycle, you got her back to where she belonged, Hugo's backyard.

After dropping her off and making sure she wouldn't escape again by tying her down with a leash, the two of you headed back to Robert's house. "Will you come inside?" You agreed and headed through the door.

There was a moment of silence as you searched for something to say. "Thanks for trying to protect me back there, even if it ended up being no big deal."

Robert shrugged, "I figured if I got you into this mess, I'd get you out of it." He reached forward and flicked a twig off your jacket. "This was stupid, I'm sorry."

"What?" You stared at him confused, "Why are you apologising? What do you have to be sorry for?"

He spread his arms, "Everything? Waking you up? Kissing you? Almost getting you killed? What if it had actually been something dangerous?"

You scrambled for something to say as he sighed dejectedly, "If something had actually happened to you I would never have forgiven myself. I can't imagine that you'd still like me either."

"No. What? No! Don't be ridiculous. You're tired, you're not thinking straight." You stammered, "Look, nothing that happened tonight was your fault. You are not a monster."

He looked at you doubtfully and opened his mouth to protest but before he could say anything you pulled him forward and kissed him. When you pulled apart his expression had changed to one of surprise.

"Does that prove my point better?" You ask.

He paused for a moment then smiled softly, "I don't know, you might have to try again."

You laughed, "Gladly."
