(Evelyn Summers)

Evelyn's mother loved horses.

Before she got sick, she would ride everyday. Her and Lavender, her dappled grey mare, were magnificent together. When ever her mother rode Lav, it looked like they were flying. They could soar over every jump in their path, complete every course, do anything.

Until her mother got sick.

The unknown disease turned her  mother into a stranger. She became thin and pale. She laid in bed all day, her eyes closed, and said nothing.

It was like she was dead to the world.

They had to sell Lavender. The dappled grey's head had sagged. When the new owner had tried to lead her into the trailer, she had spooked. Evelyn took that as a bad omen, warning her of what was Lav's new life would be like.

Then, and this was the final nail in the coffin, they had to move.

"It will be good for all of us, especially your mother." Her father had said.

Evelyn had stared at him, her mouth hanging open.

It wasn't fair. None of it was fair.

So, they moved. They boarded a plane heading to a small island called Jorvik.

The island was small, covered in forests, meadows, and mountains. It was located near the coast of Sweden.

The island a nice place. Boring, but nice.

The air there was fresh and clean. It would be good for her mother's lungs.

And, it had lots and lots of horses.

Evelyn had never seen so many horses in her life. They were everywhere. Grazing in fields, being ridden on trails, napping in the shade of tall trees.

The horses were the only good part about the island. Evelyn was hoping that her father would allow her to start riding at a stable near where they had decided to live.

She would have been perfectly content living a normal life. She would have gone to school, come home, rode, and just done whatever she wanted.

If only it had been that simple.
