Chapter 4

News Travels Fast, Gossip Travels Faster

At 8:30am precisely the Upton family awoke and began their morning routine. Mr Upton was the first downstairs to collect the mail that had been delivered and to brew a fresh pot of organic coffee. Mrs Upton was first in the shower so she could prepare a well cooked breakfast for her family whilst they washed and dressed themselves. Chesca Upton began her day by putting on her silk Jenny Packham Robe and slippers and going downstairs to the family den, which was essentially the second living room that was part of the open plan kitchen.

She loved this room, especially in the morning as the sofas were more comfy than that of the ones in the front living room, used mainly just for show when her family had guests around. She could snuggle deep into the corner of the corner sofa and soak up the smell of freshly ground coffee beans. Whilst she waited for her breakfast she watched the news, the same way she did every morning. Chesca thought it was important to be update to with current affairs as she felt it boosts ones intellect. And whilst doing this she read through her favourite newspaper on her iPad, occasionally checking twitter every now and then, she was a teenager after all.

After a delightful breakfast of oatmeal with fresh strawberries and blueberries, followed by half a grapefruit, Chesca showered and dressed herself ready for the day. As she waited for her friends to come over she spent the time carefully fishtail plaiting her hair and laying out towels on the sun loungers that surrounded the pool. She then went inside and made a fresh jug of strawberry mojitos and a small tray of finger sandwiches, which she placed neatly on the garden table on the deck. Everything was prefect and in place, just the way they always were. As if on queue she heard a knock at the door.

Standing behind it was a fresh faced Madison, wearing a gorgeous Elizabeth Hurley beach dress, although it was a little bit too on the short side to be something Chesca would wear.

“Hey girl, how are you?” Madison said with a cheeky grin.

“Wonderful thank you, and your self?” Chesca replied, reciprocating the smile.

“Even better now I’m here. These past few weeks seem to have dragged out so much. I’m glad today has finally arrived.” She spoke as she sat on one of the sun loungers, taking off her dress. The blazing heat hit her even more so she quickly rummaged through her bag searching for her suncream.

“I know what you mean. My parents keep bringing it up, gossiping away about the the different possibilities. We had the Woodley’s over for dinner the other night and it was the main topic of conversation, for like, the whole evening. I think it’s the talk of the town.” Chesca poured them each a glass of the sweet homemade drink and lay back on her lounger, soaking up the sun rays.

“The Woodley’s hey? Was Chase there?” Maddison asked slyly, sending her best friend a cheeky wink from under her sunglasses.

“Of course, our family dinners are mandatory for every member. It’s the same when we go round to his parent’s.”

“Ooh, did you get to see his bedroom?” She wiggled her perfectly plucked blonde eyebrow teasingly.

“Very funny.” She spoke sarcastically, the corners of her mouth raising slightly. “But he see’s me like a little sister. Nothing like that would ever happen. As much as I’d like it too.”

“Good then he’s all mine.” Madison half joked.

Chase Woodley was the boy of Ivy Hills Country Day School. He was handsome and charming, captain of the JV lacrosse team and captain of the swim team. With his blonde hair and blue eyes he was by far the best looking guy in the school. He was a Junior, a year older than Chesca, but their families had been very close since she was little.

There was a knock at the door, which could only be Riley. Chesca answered it and sure enough there she was, dressed head to toe in running clothes with strawberry blonde hair up in a high pony. She smiled knowingly at her and then invited her by the pool. Just as she sat back down on her sun lounger she heard a loud splash, turning around only to find Riley already in the pool.

“Sorry, it’s just so damn hot!” Chesca and Madison couldn’t help but laugh at their friends straightforwardness and confidence. Riley doggy paddled over to the edge closest to the other girls and leaned against it.

“So, what’s going on have I missed anything?” Chesca checked her watch.

“Nope, should be any time now.” All three of them shared a knowing smile and continued to gossip to pass the time by.

3 gossip magazines and several mojitos later the girls were silenced by the sound of a car door closing. Several others followed. They remained silent as they waited patiently, until it happened.

The figure of a girl appeared in the garden of the neighbouring house. She had long dark brown hair that waved down past her stomach. She walked with such grace and elegance as her dress flowed in the breeze. It almost looked like…no. It couldn’t be. She stood facing the opposite direction for a few moments until she turned around.

This girl was everything Chesca, Madison and Riley were not expecting. She was beautiful, slim and tall. He hair was glossy and full of volume. Her green eyes looked piercing in the sun. Her tanned skin was glowing and her natural beauty didn’t seem to be enhanced by any kind of makeup. This girl was perfect. Bitch.
