"It's your lucky day inmate 0017." He paused as he waited for my cell door to slam shut. " What I meant to say is its your lucky day Alana " Officer Carter said as he entered my cell.
Officer Carter and I developed a semi friendship over the past weeks. Little by little he started doing things that could land him in federal prison for helping what the government calls us talented humans; spawns. Carter would sit outside my cell and have conversations with me. We would talk mostly about Arkanza sometimes he would tell me news of the outside world. Once he tried to sneak in a corn bread for me since I haven't eaten in days; all thanks to the warden for that.
If things were different; if I wasn't what I am, if the world was different. I might have tried to have a relationship with him. He's a great looking guy; tall, dark brown hair, light brown eyes, baby face yet masculine and charming. But under these circumstances; with the world labeling the gifted as a threat to society there is no way anything could possibly happen between us. ,
"Oh. And why you say that Officer Carter or should I say Rick?" I answered as I rose from my bed. At my 5'10 height he seems to tower over me ever so slightly. He is one foot step away from me and I could smell his minty breath and musky fragrance.
"The warden has lifted your transfer your going back to the sanctuary." Officer Carter began the usual search. I could feel his hands explore my arms then down my torso.
"Oh darn it I was just getting use to this place." I mocked which made him grin just enough for me to notice.
"Well if that's the case I'll tell him you don't-"
"No. Don't do that I'm glad to go back it was starting to become boring down here."
"Ouch." He continues to touch my inner thigh and legs to check for anything suspicious.
"No hard feelings Rick but I think it's time I go back to where I belong. I'm pretty sure you will be ok with not having to help me out anymore." I felt his hand stop on my ankles for a few seconds.
"All clean." He stands straight up and backs up a few steps.
"Your wrong." He states as I lower my arms to my sides.
"About?"
"You not belonging here. If anything this is exactly where you should be. As for me helping you it's not so much as the kindness of my own heart but my job. Can't have an inmate dying on my watch now can I?" He raised an eyebrow at me as of waiting for me to respond to that comment.
There were so many questions I had with his statement. Does he mean be here with him? Or that I'm sick just like the other inmates in the box? Was he doing all those nice things risking his job and future just for the purpose of his job? Or is he lying just to cover up how he really feels?
"If that's what you think." I bluntly respond.
"Well it's been fun but your no longer my priority. Good luck inmate. " He opened the door of my cell and awaited me was another guard in a small two seater hovercraft. The other officer helped me up while Officer Carter closed the door to my cell. I hear the loud slam one last time as the locks of the door click into place.
"Oh by the way before I forget." I turned to Officer Carter and I take in his face on last time. This will be the last time I ever see him; that' is if I don't get sent down here again.
"Yes Officer?" I wait for his reply as I sat next to the other Officer behind the wheel of the black Hovercraft.
"Happy birthday Alana." He turned around without letting me respond. I watch as he made his way further down the box; then he just disappears off in the distance.
