Chapter 15

I frowned at myself in the mirror. No matter how many times I saw my messy black hair streaked with that annoying white color, I never got used to it. My hair was too long. It got in my eyes even more than usual. How am I supposed to be Night the Great, if I can't even see. That's when I decided to do something different today. Taking a thin comb from the coffee table, I brushed the hair that was in my face to the right. To my surprise, It didn't look bad. It even kept the hair from my eyes.

Sill rolled out into the living room to see me off. Literally. He was tied up in a large potato sack, so that only his head stuck out from the top. He looked like he was in the middle of being kidnapped.

“ Bob and I made a bet.” Sill grinned when he saw my confused expression.

“ Thank Bob for me, then.” I said. “ He did what I've been wanting to do since I first met you.”

Sill headbutted my back as I turned to leave for my next trial. I'm not really looking forward to going to Morphing/Shapeshifting. It sounds a bit painful. Who knows what it involves.

Today, I wore a black dress shirt with a red tie. Although, what I was wearing was the last thing on my mind. The image of the large man I saw the day of my Raid Planning trial kept sneaking into my brain. Why did he call me the Dark Hero? He mentioned something about being reincarnated too. (For those who like to go back and re-read, this conversation took place near the end of chapter 7). And then there was Crystal. Every time I thought of the strange man I met, my mind wanders off to her.

What should I say to her when we meet again? Should I act casual? Pretend that nothing happened? Should I act softer around her? I hate feeling like this. I hate not knowing what to do. I like to be in control of everything.

After what felt like a decade of searching, I made it to my trial. The door was thick and green. It was made out of some kind of lizard. Scales jutted out from random places. Do dragons exist here? If so, then I'm sure that a dragon was killed to make this door. I looked pretty hard, but I couldn't find a doorknob.

Giving up, I gave the door a solid shove. It swung open and slammed against the wall. I thought it would be heavier than that. Great, now I attracted attention. Staring at my feet, I walk into the room. Off to a good start. I join the group without making eye contact with anyone, still staring at the ground. I didn't realize I was late too.

“ Good morning brother. Is your nose okay?” a voice says. A kind voice. I recognize it from somewhere.

“ Long time no see, Star. My nose is fine, no thanks to you.” I say looking into those familiar hazel eyes.

She smiled at me like she did when we first met. She walked up to me and put a hand on my shoulder. Her smile changed, showing a bit of concern and worry. It wasn't a genuine smile.

“ And.” She hesitated. “ How's your roommate?”

I couldn't hold it in anymore. I laughed from the depths my soul. Star giggled, a small soft sound. She knew exactly what Sill was like. She knew the answer to that question before she asked it. Everyone around me smiled or laughed too. I guess they haven't seen this side of me yet.
