Madi's POV:
I woke up in someone's tight embrace. I lifted my head slightly, seeing light brown curls from the corner of my eye. Smiling, I laid my head back onto Jay's chest and listened to his steady breath, feeling his chest rise and fall rhythmically. I remembered everything that hapened last night- the sobbing followed by an explanation, and then more sobbing. He kept saying that it wasn't my fault, but if I wouldn't have left, none of this would have ever happened.
"Madi?" I heard. I turned my head as Jay tightened his grip on my waist.
"Yeah?" I whispered.
"Do... Do you... Forgive me...? For everything I've done?" I saw tears threatening to spill over in his eyes.
I nodded, "Of course, Jaybird." I resisted saying, It was all my fault after all... knowing that it would just start an arguement. He smiled and kissed my cheek. We both sat up as we heard the other boys' footsteps on the stairs.
"Tea or coffee, anyone?" I asked.
"Tea!" Nathan and Tom yelled at the same time.
"I'd like some tea as well," Siva responded.
"I'll take some coffee," Max replied.
I looked at Jay expactantly. "Tea please?"
I giggled. "So, four teas and one coffee?" I asked. Everyone nodded. I walked into the kitchen and got down six mugs, knowing I couldn't do without my morning coffee either.
"Need some help?" I heard. I spun around to find Nathan leaning against the doorway.
"Yes please?" I asked. He chuckled and grabbed the kettle, pouring steamy hot water into four of the mugs.
As I was pouring coffee for Max and I, Nathan asked, "So what's going on between you and Bird?"
"What do you mean?" I replied.
"You both just seem... happier this morning..."
"We just cleared up some stuff last night. And I'm really glad we did," I smiled.
"Whatever you say..." he said, pulling tea bags out of the mugs.
"I'm serious!" I shot back. He put his hands up, defensively and chuckled. Together, we distributed the drinks to the other boys and sat down in the living room. After a while, I heard a knock on the door.
"Be right back," I said, getting up. I opened the door to find the person I least expected. Luke. "Oh, um... hi. What are you doing here?" I asked nervously.
"I was just checking to make sure you were okay. You sounded really... upset on the phone yesterday..."
"Oh. Well, I'm fine,"
"You sure?"
"Yeah..." There was an awkward silence.
"So, can I come in?" he asked.
"No!" I responded, a bit too quickly, "Ummm... I've got people in here, cleaning, and I don't want to get in their way..."
"Oh, alright," at least he seemed to buy it, "So you're absolutely 100% positive you're okay?"
"MMhmm!"
"Alright, I guess I'll see you later then?"
"Yeah, see ya!" I sighed and shut the door as he left.
"Who was that?" Jay asked as I sat back down on the couch.
"My ex-boyfriend," I responded plainly.
"And...?" Tom urged.
"Alright, here's the thing, I know what you guys did. I've known for a while, so don't blame Jay. My ex-boyfriend, Luke, is an FBI agent. When you guys disappeared from England, they asked Luke to look out for five guys coming into America from England. Then he somehow found out that you were coming to my place, so I told him that one of you had a family emergency and you all had to stay there. But if he ever finds out that you're here... well... we're all toast..."
"So, basically we're not safe here, and we're going to have to leave," Max summarized.
I nodded.
"Alright," Jay said, "The boys and I will pack up and leave tonight. We'll stay in low key motels and keep on the move..."
"What?! You have to take me with you!" I argued.
"I'm not going to put you in danger, Madi! I've already gotten you in enough trouble by asking to stay here!"
"I became just as much of a criminal when I lied to Luke. If you leave me, I'll go to jail," I knew this would get him. If there's one thing Jay really cares deeply about, it's me. My suspisions were confirmed when his look faultered.
"They'd never find out," he said calmly.
"You know I'm not good with guilt, Jay..." He sighed and I could tell I've won.
"Let's start packing, lads," Siva suggested, and everyone but Jay followed him upstairs. Jay sat down next to me and wrapped his arms around me, resting his chin on top of my head.
"Why'd you lie for us, Mads?" he whispered.
"Because you're my best friend and I love you," I answered without hesitation.
He sighed again. "C'mon, I'll help you pack," he said, getting up and grabbing my hand.
"Don't you need to pack?"
"Well, considering I slept out here last night, I never got a chance to unpack, anyway..."
