- kidnapped? nah, i like the phrase attempted kidnapping -

Jade sat on the park bench, as she often did during her lunch breaks. Most of the other doctors stayed inside, chatting about current pop stars and political problems. Her? She liked the quiet hum of electric lights in the nearest park, the roar of the engines as cars drove past. People found it loud, in this quiet little city, but Jade came from a louder neighborhood.

With curious eyes, she watched as a man ran out of a bank, chased by several security guards and policemen. Now, that was a bit more her speed. She watched in amusement, her hands holding a book loosely as she regarded the scene. Should she help? Only if forced to. It wasn't wise to mess with the government's problems. Broad daylight wasn't her preferred stage. She liked the shadow of the night.

The man was running faster now. Running towards her. She let her hair fall around her face as she looked down, hiding her face and the small smile that flickered beneath the curtain of her curls. Maybe there was going to be some action for her today.

As the man ran into the park, a black backpack probably filled with stolen money, right hand on a holster ready to draw his gun, he seemed to notice her, sitting so calmly despite the robbery in progress. As he drew closer, Jade realized that the man was Chinese, like her, with small dark eyes and tanned skin.

As she was about to get up, placing her book into her satchel, the man sprinted towards her, grabbing her by the wrist and holding her in a loose chokehold. Pathetic. She thought, sighing. Such a loose chokehold, such a futile attempt to take her hostage. Of course, in this world, she was normal weak little Dr Wong. No kicking ass.

"You come near me or I'll shoot! I'll shoot her!" He took his gun out, and pressed it against my temple. "I'll blow her brains out!"

The security guards and the police force spread around us, guns out, surrounding the robber. I small smile graced my face again, and in a low voice, I whispered to my attacker. "I don't think this is the best course of action, do you-" My eyes flashed a light gray as I read his mind, "Dylan."

"What the fück?" He muttered, tightening his grip on my neck. "How'd you know my name?"

"I know a lot of things, Singaporean," I said, my voice still low. "And I don't think you want to hurt me."

"Why?"

"Lift up my hair from my neck," I ordered, and with his uneasy hands shaking, he lifted the hair up from the nape of my neck, revealing the tattoo on the back of my neck.

The Phoenix.

"Oh, shït." Before he could react, I lifted my leg and stabbed his foot with the back of my heel. He yelled in pain, and I lifted my leg again, kicking him backward, twisting his arm out of the chokehold and then flipping him in front of me. Fixing my satchel, I looked at my watch. Nearly time, got to go.

I made sure my clothes were back to their pristine condition, and then walked over the groaning man, making sure to sink my heels into his stomach.

Well, I made an oath to heal, but I think that lets me beat the shït out of anyone who tries to kidnap me.

- under investigation. well, that's nice -

"Pass me the seven-inch will you?" I said, visor over my eyes, in full surgery scrubs and gown. My colleague and friend Liz glanced at me with a confused look on her face as one of the nurses (Olive, I think her name was) handed me the scalpel. "Do you have an issue, Dr Greenwood?"
