Oscar was sat at a table nestled near the corner of the school quad, quietly enjoying the sandwich that he bought for lunch. He saw Noah emerge from the north side of the school, and with one backpack strap over his shoulder, begin approaching his table.
"Oh shit," thought Oscar, noticing the forthcoming boy. "Please don't come over here..."
Completely ignoring Oscar's silent pleas to God, Noah sat down next to him with little delay and gingerly pulled a salad out of his bag.
A few minutes passed before either of them spoke. Oscar glaring at Noah with one eye, finally looked over and asked, "What are you doing?"
Noah, brandishing a mouth full of lettuce answered, "Eating my salad...."
"I mean, why are you eating it here?" asked Oscar gesturing to the otherwise empty table.
"Oh, I don't know. I can move if you want."
Oscar very generously considered the offer, but ultimately decided, "No, it's fine. You can stay."
"Cool," said Noah, taking another bite of his salad. "So, how have you been? I haven't see you around much."
"Yeah," Oscar said, "I've been busy, with you know, uh, classes..."
"So, why'd you switch band classes?" He asked Noah.
"The other instructor, Mr. Medina. He was a huge dick. Have you ever been in one of his classes?" asked Noah.
"No, but I've heard other people say that too. That he's a dick," said Oscar.
"Well, it's true," Noah agreed.
Oscar just nodded silently.
Noah shoveled the last of his salad into his mouth and rose from the bench.
"Hey, I've got to go, but we should hang out sometime."
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and held it towards Oscar.
"Here, give me your number."
Oscar hesitantly took the phone and tapped its screen, adding his number to the contacts.
"Here," he said, and handed it back to Noah.
"Thanks, I'll text you later," Noah said, and in an instant was walking away.
Oscar was alone again, left with only his thoughts and a sandwich.
