You, Me, and Riley

chapter 4

"Uughh is it time to go yet?" I said through a yawn as I looked up at Hayden and Dana. I was half way through my 3rd movie and it was already almost 11pm! I was starting to get tired, cranky, and uncomfortable I just wanted to go home.

"Not yet sweat pea." Hayden said. She stood up next to my bed and ran her fingers through my hair. "Why don't you close your eyes for a bit and we will wake you up when the doctor gets here. I can tell there getting heavy." I quickly shake my head no, I refuse to sleep in this place!

I wasn't sure what to make of all of this. Hayden was really affectionate and I kind of liked it even though I totally wasn't used to it. I like sitting on her lap, or when she runs her fingers through my hair, I really liked when she called me sweat pea. It's been a long time since someone has done things like that. And Dana is kind of the same way just not as touchy-feely but I like that too. It's like they care about me.  I kinda remember my mom being like this, she cared about me and made me feel better.

That's when I realized that Hayden was lightly brushing her fingers down the side of my face, and it was making my eyes close. She's tricking me into falling asleep! She must be a magician! Just before I finally gave in to sleep my curtain was thrown open by my nurse and the doctor.

"Riley! Thank you so much for being so patient with us today. My name is Dr. Rodges and I will be looking at your x-rays." He said with a smile. I jerked up on the bed real fast eyeing the big machine that was being wheeled into my room. It's been a couple of years since I've seen a machine like that, last time it looked scarier than it actually was hopefully the same would happen this time.  "This is the x-ray machine. We are going to take a bunch of pictures of your arm with this and then we will get our final answer ok?"

The next 20 minutes were some of the most painful minutes of my life. The nurses would bend my arm left and right and up and down and every which way just to take a picture. And even worse Hayden and Dana had to stand outside the room.

"No more." I cried as the nurse walked back in after one particularly painful angle.

"One more picture and then we are all done, you are doing such a good job!" she said as she grabbed my hand and moved it again. I held my breath and waited for the picture to be taken. "Great job Riley we are all done, the doctor will look at the x-rays and fill you in soon alright." She said as she walked out with the machine and Dana and Hayden ran in.

I wanted to be mad at them, they promised me they wouldn't leave! But when I went to turn away I saw that Hayden had been crying and Dana looked super pale.

"Oh Angel." Hayden said pulling me into her arms. I didn't even realize I was crying until she started whispering in my ear. "Don't cry my sweet girl. Hey if you do have to get a cast what color do you want it to be?" I was crying too hard to answer so instead I pointed at the purple shirt Dana was wearing. "Yeah? You want purple?" She asked rubbing my back I nodded as I buried my head in her neck and realized that she was bouncing me on her hip as she swayed around the room, but for some reason I didn't care.
