__Marshall Valentine
"C'mon! Are you really going to leave me with a pack of teenagers on my own in New York?"
Mrs. Lopez laughed out loud.
"They aren't wolves, Valentine. You can handle them on your own. You're scary like that."
"They'll eat me alive. Can't the baby hold on for three more weeks?"
She slapped my arm.
"No. I need to get rid of this thing."
Well, that was one way to look at it.
"Look, just get someone else to accompany you guys."
If only it was that easy. Teachers only got time off on weekends, basically. No one wanted to be stuck with their students on the weekend.
The only reason why I'd been so open to going to New York (aside from the fact that I had to take my class to the museum) was because I'd have the opportunity to be alone with Nightengale.
As long as we avoided the students, no one would have cared. No one would have recognized us in a place like New York.
That was but a dream now. It had been a week since Nightengale caught Lisa and I...in the compromising position we were in.
I saw her in my class and around school almost everyday, but the look she gave me was enough to break my heart.
It was a look of polite respect. A look that I received from most of my students.
Nightengale was distancing herself from me and there was nothing I could do about it.
Not here, not at home.
I'd become a prisoner. I felt as if Lisa was watching my every move. It wasn't that she made it obvious. It was in the way she would ask me certain questions with a smile plastered in to her face.
Something told me not to underestimate Lisa. Logically, I'd known her long enough not to.
She should have left my house by now, but she had basically taken over. There were signs of her everywhere. She began buying me new shirts and she went grocery shopping and bought products that she thought was best for us.
I could see my own son becoming almost as miserable as I was without Nightengale.
What was I to do though? Lisa had nowhere else to go. I feared she would start using drugs again if I let her be on her own.
She wasn't the kind of woman who could handle being completely on her own. If she ever felt as if she was alone, she'd start seeking company. In this case, I was worried that she would try to get attention from the wrong crowd.
In so many ways, she was still a child. I didn't know why she was the way she was, but I knew that I had desperately fallen in love with her at one point in my life.
I rubbed my temple. There were so many things going on in my life.
"It's okay, Mrs. Lopez. Safe delivery."
She was due to have her baby the following two weeks. She hadn't been sure when I'd asked her about the trip to New York.
I headed back to my own classroom. I needed to prepare for class with the seniors. The little f*ckers treated History like garbage.
Just then, some kid threw some slime looking thing at another, which almost hit me.
I just didn't know what was wrong with kids these days.
