After the Fight

Marissa couldn't focus on first period. It was okay because her first period was Art. She was finished with her half-assed painting. She wasn't good at painting but she needed an easy credit. Junior year is hard. Not to mention, the two AP classes she was taking; these of course were AP History and AP Biology. Why did she put herself through this much shit?

"Miss. D'Vall? Are you going to work on anything today?" Mrs. Taylor asked. Marissa shook her head and was about to say something when "Marissa D'Vall, Please report to the office" come over the loud speaker. The frog in her throat became a hippo and she got up and sulked her way to the office.

Marissa didn't say anything as she walked to her persecution in the office. She felt rather alone lately but she knew she had people to be with. She took a deep breath and entered the room. Mr. Glee had his usual constipated face plastered on when she came in... so far so good.

"Miss, D'Vall... have a seat." He motioned with his hand. Marissa nodded and sat down.

"I assume you know why you are here... your brother and Mr. Jensen were in a fight. I know that you and Chase were an item not long ago. Is there something going on that may have caused the fight?"

'What the hell? Isn't it weird that the principal is asking me about my love life... well... ex-love life? Should I tell him about my... situation?' Thought Marissa. Oh right! He is the football coach and she she did go up to him after the games.

Marissa spoke up, "Well," 'come on think Marissa' she told herself before continuing, "What did they say?"

"If they told me what I needed to know I wouldn't have called you down... but not much." he answered.

Well shit...now what.

"Well... Chase and I broke up." It was sort of true. Marissa tried to think of what to say next. She should just come clean. He is going to find out anyways.

"Well that is mostly true but," Marissa hesitated, " I am," she waited

"Go on, Miss. D'Vall"

She took a deep breath, "I am pregnant, Mr. Glee. Chase is the father." She said once again embarrassed and very awkward having told that to her principal. She just blurted it out to save her brother's ass. It was one of the hardest things to tell someone.

Mr. Glee raised his eyebrows and cleared his throat, "Oh..." he straightened up. "I am sorry to have asked that then. It makes sense now. I hope you do know that your brother and Chase had no right to get physical on my football field... Please take care Miss. D'Vall" he motioned for the door. Marissa got up confused and worried.

"Please don't tell anyone. I only told you to save my brother from getting expelled." Marissa explained.

"Well I didn't expel Gavin or Chase but I had to suspend them from the game on Friday."

"What? You can't that is Gavin's chance at a scholarship. Please, don't do this, sir." Marissa begged him.

"What is done is done, Marissa. I am sorry. We have a no fighting policy here. The would be expelled but it was both of their first offenses so they have a week of detention and no game."

Marissa sighed. She couldn't believe this was actually happening. Gavin might lose is scholarship and now the principal knows her secret. She just left. She was in a bad mood now. 'This sucks... and its all my fault,' Marissa thought as she sulked her way to second period, AP Biology. Unfortunately, making this day get worse, Chase was in class with her and they were partners for the upcoming project.

"Okay students, you have today to work on your projects in class and the rest of the week outside of class to finish them. Presentations start next Monday." Mrs. Bradberry announced and kids began to shuffle around the room. Chase's expression shifted when we made eye contact and he moved next to me.

An awkward silence grew between us. Chase finally cleared his throat, "So should we do a presentation or a board?" He was avoiding the huge elephant in the room.. or should I say the huge bun in the oven?

"Well, the power point would be easier and we could work on it at our own homes." Marissa suggested. He simply nodded and pulled out his computer.

He finally addressed the tension, "I assume you know that I can't play Friday and I have detention all week... as well as Gavin?"

"No shit, Sherlock! You two got into a fight... over me" Marissa trailed off at the end biting her lip.

"Yeah... look about our conversation the other night under the bleachers," he began but Marissa put her hand up to stop him. I couldn't handle another talk right now.

"It's fine. You made it very clear how you felt. I get it. Have a nice life, Chase." Marissa sighed not waiting to hear it.

"Actually, I want to tell you that I will help you."

Not what she was expecting.

"I mean," Chase began, "If you need help buying stuff, I can help." Was Chase actually stepping up? Did Gavin knock some sense into him? " I know I am not ready to be a father but I can help financially."

'Well shit. There we go... he just wants to give me some of his money. His family is loaded but I am not just some charity case who will take their hush money.' Marissa thought

"Excuse me? I don't want your money, Chase. I want you to be there for your kid. I don't just want to walk around being the slut who doesn't know who her baby's father is. Own up to your mistake, Chase" Marissa said in a hushed whisper. SHE WAS SO MAD.

The bell rang and I picked up my stuff and headed out the door. Chase ran after me.

"Marissa, wait" He walked after her but was stopped by Sabrina grabbing his hand and stepping in front of him. Marissa arrived at the locker and wiped the tear running down my face as she watched their exchange. Chase had a desperate look on his face but instead of continuing his mission, he smiled down at Sabrina and walked off with her as if forgetting all about Marissa and his child.

'This will be the rest of my life.' Marissa thought as she walked to third period.
