In Jacksonville, Mississippi 1962 it can be beautiful at night but the people can be dangerous. Everyone here are strong on their beliefs. Whites should be on one side and the blacks on the other side and everything would be just peachy. I'm Adriana, I'm in a group called the True Believers lead by a group of 17 year olds like me to end segregation and set out protest just like the freedom riders. Its a little hard doing that if your the preachers daughter of a small town. We have to keep it a secret.
Mostly I rarely get freedom so I go to school, stay in the house, do my homework, and just maybe go get to hang out with my friends Brenda and Margret who which are also in the the True Believers with me. The school year was starting to end and I was about to go to the 11th grade and I had to fix a future for myself but it was too early in the year to figure that out for me. I told myself this summer was going to be different some how make the most of these two months. Since it was the last day of school the school was going to have a party at Crazy Joes where you can be free from the segregation and be yourself. I liked the fact of being free to do what I want without any obligations everyday. Sometimes I dream about me being under a tree seeing wide range of of green grass land as the sun tried to peek through the trees. I would play with my long black hair set free from the ponytails I usually put them in. Then I would feel the warmth of the sun as I lay under the tree I and would feel a small breeze. It felt like every time it past by me it took my troubles with it. I realize its a dream because I have never felt this safe this much relaxation. It feels amazing. Then I wake up to reality where this the only safe place for me is my home and when the only time I feel the warm sun is when I'm walking to school. The clock was just about turn to 3 o'clock. I sat there counting the minutes by 5 minutes then two now one. When the bell rung everyone left the classroom in a hurry to have that feeling of relief of no more homework or staying in the same school for a whole 8 hours anymore until 2 months. "So what you wearing for tonight at Crazy Joes." Brenda asked. She was smiling at the fact school was over to and her outfit matched the emotion, happiness. She was wearing a plain yellow dress with white flat shoes. She had a pretty figure with some curves on her that made all the guys whistle when they saw her going down the She had short curly hair that went to her shoulders. Margaret is one of the sweetest and most confident girls I know in the school. She is a little thick boned but she is not afraid to show her curves as well. She didn't care what people said behind her back. She had a little but of red blush on to go with her black and white dress that stopped at her knees and her hair pulled to a bun.
"I thought of wearing that black dress with gold polka dots",I said excitedly.
"Yeah that's one beautiful dress who are you trying to get tonight",said Margret with a one of those looks she give me that she thinks I'm up to something.
"I heard that Reggie president of the True Believers from our group likes you. I can see you together slow dancing on the dance floor".
"Really I've never noticed".I said in surprised "I guess I haven't paid enough attention".
"Yeah because you are always doing your little homework or get to wound up into out meetings." Brenda said it in an exaggerated duh face.
"Now you know that pastor Jones is not going to let you go to Crazy Joes",said
Margret.
"Who said pastor Jones had to know about it", I said in a mischievous smile.
Believe me I am good but this is the last day of school and I had to go to this party.
"Okay well I will pick you up at 11 o clock tonight don't be late Reggie said he was going to take us on his uncles truck", said Brenda.
My bus came up to the bus stop slowly I said bye to Brenda and Margret as I got on. I went all the way to the back not because we had to do it but , because there was one seat where I could be left alone. *****************************************
