Chapter 3

“Rise and shine sleepy head!” I heard Beth say from the other side of my room. 5 more minutes! I threw a pillow at her.

“Ow! Hey!” She protested.

“Five minutes!”

“You gotta get ready to be Sydney, and you’re gonna need a long time for that.  Get up!”

“No.”

“Get up or I’ll pour freezing water on you!”

“Umh!” I sat up quickly to see her leaning over me with a bucket. “You’d better not!”

“Lucky you’re awake or I would have!”

I grabbed my jeans and a tee shirt and jumped into the shower. The warm water was calming but I was still so worried about the movie premiere.  I got out and got dressed.

“Now, Mom booked some spa people to come over here to give you a waxing.” Beth exclaimed once she saw me exit the bathroom.

“NO! I do not wax! It hurts too much!”

“Only a little.  Come on man up!”

“First of all I am not a man so I will not ‘man up’ and second of all, NO!”

“You have to do this for Sydney!”

After a long pause I gave in, “FINE!”

After 4 hours of waxing, plucking and prodding the spa people said I was ready for hair. My legs, eyebrows and above my lip was stinging but I continued on for 2 more hours of hair.  My hair was huge by the time we were done and I hated it. I like my hair as it was, but I guess Sydney liked her hair this way.

Beth came in with a picture of Sydney and looked from it to me, me to it, it to me. “Hmmm…. I guess you’ll pass for her. Come on we gotta find you something to wear.” Beth secretly worships all of her fashion magazines so she’s pretty good when it comes to that.

She searched through Sydney’s clothing while muttering “Sydney’s outfit but Skylar would wear it.” I was falling asleep and pretty soon I was fast asleep. Someone was shaking me! “Skylar!” I heard someone say.

“AHHHH!!!!” I woke up screaming. What? Don’t judge me, she scared me!

“Skylar! These outfit choices aren’t that scar.  Well maybe that one is.”  Beth said while picking up an outfit and putting it in the closet.

“It’s not that.  It’s just…. you scared me.”

“Oh.”  She pointed towards the outfits. “Choose.”

I ended up wearing a black one sleeved dress that had a strange design thingy on the sleeve. “Can’t we just take it off?” I asked meaning the design thingy.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I would but it’s not my clothing, it’s Sydney’s and she would have worn it like that.”

“I look like a freak!”

“No you don’t.  You look pretty! Actually, it’s the first time I’ve seen you in a dress.” The thing is I don’t like dresses or skirts very much; I’m what you would call a tomboy.  I much prefer jeans or shorts and a tee shirt.

“I wore a dress to that… thing a few years back.”

“Sure you did.”

I sighed. “How much longer?” I complained.

“We have make up after this.”

Argghhhh, I’m going to die, I can’t stand this! It’s too long! I have been being worked on for six hours! SIX HOURS!

“It won’t take too long. I’m a pro!”

“You’re doing it?”

“Yep.”

“But you have no experience.”

She looked offended. “What makes you think that? I have been wearing makeup to school and parties for 2 years!”

2 years? That would have made her twelve when she started. “You don’t wear it out of the house!”

“I do it in the bathroom before class.” I was struck dumb that my little sister was wearing makeup.  That made me feel old even though I was only seventeen. I was used to thinking of her as my baby sister.  Maybe she was no longer a baby.

“Come on!  Your outfit is done. Makeup time!” She squealed as she led me into her bathroom. She pulled a chair into the room in front of the mirror and patted it meaning for me to sit down.  I sat down. She walked over to the wall by the mirror, made a shh motion with her hand and removed a brick revealing a hidden storage area. She pulled out tons of makeup and sat them on the counter. She turned my chair so I couldn’t look in the mirror.

0ne hour later she turned the chair around again. I looked in the mirror and saw…. Sydney. I had loads of eyeliner on, my eyelashes were super fake,  I had red eye shadow and bright red lips. “I look just like her!”

“Thank you!” She said proudly. Just then the doorbell rang. “Perfect timing!”

“Oh my gosh! He’s here! What am I gonna do?”

“Don’t freak out first of all, and um… pretend you’re feeling a little sick so he won’t try to kiss you.”

“um…. Okay. Good Idea. Thanks Beth.” She looked at me expecting me to get up.

“You have to go see him sometime. You can’t avoid it forever.”

“Right I gotta be strong… for Sydney.” I said as I got up and started walking towards the stairs trying to hide my anxiety.
