M07

The sliding door open with a uncomfortable shriek.
"M07, please follow me." A man dressed in black lured me out of the small room.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked, curiously.
"For testing."
"Testing? For what?"
"Listen, I'm just following orders. And if you don't stop asking questions, I'm gonna make birthday candles out of your bones. Got that?"
I nodded, not wanting to irritate him further.
"Good." We walked around a corner and to the testing room, each step was approached in silence.
The testing room door slid open. An older man and woman greeted us at the door.
"M07! We were just talking about you! Come now, have a seat!" The older man gave a smile that made his eyes seem kind.
"Why should I? Why am I here? Where is my father? Where is..." I was interrupted by a loud bang.
"Look here, child," the woman approached me "I get you're confused, but you need to calm your butt down."
"It's okay, Ann. Leave her. She has a right to ask questions." The man gestured to a chair placed in front of a cold, steel table.
"Go." The man in black growled.
"Fine. Whatever." I replied annoyed with his angry attitude.
I sat down in the chair and watched as the man in black walked out and stood outside of the door in a stiff position. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
"That poor man." I mumbled.
"What's that?" The older man asked, an eyebrow raised.
"He could have any job, he could be living the dream, doing what he loves, but he's stuck here annoyed by some random millennial. Just saying." A matter-of-fact smirk met my left cheekbone as the man smiled, his eyelids wrinkling at the temples.
"Who says he doesn't love this job?"
"Who loves acting angry at the world? No to mention, the way he stands so stiff? There's better ways to guard a door. His knees are locked. Does he realize that if this conversation takes too long, he could possibly pass out? He's not even that fit, what is his job even?" I rambled on. The older man began laughing, a hardy chuckle escaping his chapped lips.
"You got all that in two minutes?"
"What? Am I supposed to be some dumb kid to brainwash, now I'm just gonna ask this once again, what am I doing here?"
"You're here for testing."
"What kind of testing?"
"I want to know how your mind works?"
"Why, So you can brainwash me?"
"Yes. Of course, to brainwash you," he chuckled "No, I just want to get to know you better."
"Than why don't you just have a normal conversation with me rather than dragging me to an interrogation room?"
The man sighed. "I'm Rob." He said putting out his hand.
"Good to know." I replied, crossing my arms and rejecting the handshake.
Rob's expression turned sad, but Soon was covered by another kind smile.
"Do you like puzzles?"
"Why would I? Is doing a puzzle gonna contribute to your lame test?"
"Nope. I just got a craving to solve some puzzles."
I smiled at the oddities this man was displaying.
"Fine, then. What's the puzzle, Rob?"
"Hmm. Let's see... I'm gonna start with a little game, a puzzle of sorts, of course. But more on the game side."
"Alright, shoot."
"Ann, can you hand me that packet?" Rob pointed at the counter Ann was standing by. She silently agreed and handed him the stapled paper.
"Here's a list of about 30 people. A little bio is including for each. A mom of four kids, a scientist, an inventor's apprentice, a kid with medical illness, and plenty more. I want you to think about twelve people that would be fit to start over on another planet. Say we only have enough supplies and space for twelve people. Who should go?"
"That's insane. I have to choose? Why is this even a game?" I retorted pushing the packet away.
"Please, I just at least start off by telling me ten people who wouldn't make it the first ten days, and go from there. This is an exercise that challenges your thinking skills. I'll give you forty minutes and then I'll check back in and give my input, okay?"
"Fine. But this is so stupid."
