petrarch and laura

27 2 1

there once was a man
who, brokenhearted
never wanted to see the light of day again
from then on he saw only darkness
but he had the most colorful mind
his thoughts flowed through his fingers
and wove bright tapestries onto paper

there once was a girl
who never looked his way
he loved her with ever fiber of his being
and his heart sung only for her
but she never knew

petrarch wrote for laura
beautiful words
until his pen broke
and his ink ran dry

far in the future
there was a girl
she was just like this man
lonely, heartbroken
and drowning in darkness
though hers came
from inside of her own mind

their only difference was
instead of weaving tapestries on paper
she typed bold black words
until sweat flowed down her back
and tears flowed down her face
because there was, too, a girl
who never once looked her way

but another difference between the lovers
far in the future
and deep in the past:
this young girl's version of laura
knew she loved her
and still she ran
never giving a second glance back

oh, petrarch
if only you had called out her name.
