I held out the Zardox in front of me, and Rose gently touched the jar it was held in. It shuttered when she touched it, and she jerked back her hand.
"It's okay, Rose," I reassured. "It won't, and can't, hurt you."
Again, she reached out her hand, and, this time, when the Zardox wiggled, she didn't budge.
"How is it alive?" She asked, intently glaring into the liquid.
"It's its own world. When he sleeps, he produces new liquid, and it consumes the old liquid, which would eventually become new liquid. He doesn't need oxygen, or light, or heat, or anything but this jar and liquid. The jar; it's not really a jar, but more of an exoskeleton, is virtually indestructible. I could literally throw this into a pit of lava, and the Zardox would still be alive, no harm done. The only problem with this one is, well, how did he get here? His planet is millions and millions of light years away, and is created millions of years in the future. Zardox have no way to move themselves, so somebody placed him here. But why? And how?" I placed the Zardox back in its crate and paced around Rose.
"These creatures are completely useless!" I exclaimed. "They only live to live!"
"Well, does th--"
"They can't reproduce themselves; either. The atmosphere has the right amount of chemicals to continually make new Zardox."
"Doctor, what about--"
"They don't have any brainwaves; it's like they're permanently in a coma."
"Doctor!" Rose shouted, grabbing my arm.
"What?" I asked, angry that she interrupted.
"You said the liquid keeps them alive, right? Well, what will it do to other lifeforms?" She asked, looking at the Zardox.
I looked at Rose and smiled, bending down slightly to hug her.
"You're a genius!" I exclaimed, kissing her on the forehead.
I grabbed the Zardox out of the crate and put on my trenchcoat, running down to the alley that we found the poor creature.
