Ellie sat in the cafeteria, gazing boredly at her phone while eating some form of cardboard this middle school had christened "pizza". Chris, her best friend since kindergarten, plonked down next to her and put his face in his hands.
"What's wrong?"
"Everything."
"Elaborate."
"Fucking derranger assigned us three hours of homework again"
"Again?"
"I know. Bullshit." Chris looked up, "do you have a portable charger?"
"No."
"Oh." It was days like this that Ellie enjoyed the most. Making casual conversation, complaining about random things, talking about life in general. As she dozed off, a rather peculiar looking scene could have been seen, had anyone bothered to look out the dusty, dirty window...

Below, at the school gates, two men dressed entirely in black stood, expressionless, one of them talking into a walk-talkie, the other glancing around, checking for people. The man with the walker-talkie whispered into the gadget: "Are we still sure it is wise to attack in broad daylight?" A voice crackled back. "Ok." The man said, putting it away and unsheathing a gun. "Let's go." The two men started towards the school, as did other adults dressed in black, sneaking in, guarding the exit, no escape...

Ellie and Chris were just finishing their pizza when they heard the screams. At once, the both assumed the worst. This was America, after all. But when five people dressed in black bulletproof and holding guns burst into the already terrified cafeteria, they realised that it was so much worse. In the scuffle that followed after, windows smashing, kids tied up, and stampeding footsteps, Ellie managed to hide in a small broom closet near the back of the hall, and seconds later a girl she knew to be called Amy squeezed in best to her, dragging Chris and her younger brother, Andrew, with her. Wordlessly, Ellie and the other three peeked through cracks In the door, to the chaos outside. Little by little, the kids in the cafeteria were being sedated and tied up, and being dragged slowly from the hall. The people in black took one last look around the room, seemingly forgetting about the closet. It was hours after they left when Ellie dared to open the door a crack, despite Amy begging her not to. Tiptoeing out into the destroyed cafeteria, Ellie strained her eyes and ears for any noise or movement. When there was nothing, she beckoned to the others, and Chris, Alex, and Amy stepped out, rubble from where the ceiling had collapsed crunching under their low-price school sneakers. Everyone seemed at loss for words. They stared around, the food still on the few upright tables as if the students had just vanished, the blood seeping out from a dinner lady who had jumped in front of some seventh-graders, the sunlight streaming through the smashed window. It was Alex who finally broke the silence by saying "was....was that..." he couldn't finish his sentence. Chris sat on a chunk of broken wall, picked up a bomb shell and began turning it over in his hands, apparently in deep thought. He sat like that for not long before he asked "Where is everyone?" Everyone looked at him like he was mad. "I don't mean everyone at this school, I mean where are the cops? Where are the paramedics? Where are the firefighters? Why did they just leave this here? Even if no one called anyone in this school, were surrounded by homes and a park. Surely somebody heard gunshots or explosions?" Nobody had an answer. Silence again.
Amy spoke up "should we look for survivors?" Ellie was about to say yes when they heard voices.
"Where are the cops then?"
"Are you stupid? If it's who we think it is, he must've done something to any witnesses."
"Oh god, look at that."
"Shut up"
Everyone looked at each other in confusion. The conversation continued.
"Should we call Alina?"
"We need to find proof whether it was him or not"
"Taylor, I think we both know who did this." The voices were right near a gap in the wall now.
"Fine, I'll call Maria, she flew here last night. I'll hang back, you go look and see if you can find any survivors."
Footsteps approached the hole. Ellie knew there was no pint in running. It would make too much noise. A woman of about thirty poked her head out the side, her sandy hair tied up in a neat bun, and surveyed the scene. She spotted the kids immediately. "Don't move." She said pointing her gun at them. Amy began to cry. "Taylor, get here now" she called, not taking her eyes of them. A slightly younger woman with bags under her dark eyes and a distressed look on her face stepped into view. She looked at them, then at the woman with the gun, then back again. "They're kids, Ally. Put your gun down" Ally lowered her gun, but didn't take her eyes of them. The other woman, Taylor, walked up to them, uprighted a chair, and sat down. Ally stood next to her. "You might want to sit down, she said, gesturing to the floor. Afraid, they sat, and all at once began to shout and ask questions. "Who are you?"
"What's going on?"
"Where are the cops?"
"Why do you have a gun?"
Taylor lit a cigarette and began to smoke. "Shut up" She said. Her voice had a tone that made them be quiet. "I'm going to tell you what's going on, but before that I'm going to tell you that all your families think you're dead now" she paused to look for a reaction, but apparently everyone was too shocked to say anything. A tear leached out of Amy's eye. Taylor continued. "My name is Taylor, this is Ally. We work for the rebellion.."
She was interrupted by Ally, who had got somebody on FaceTime. A woman of about 22, with brown hair scraped back into a messy bun, but otherwise unruffled looking, was driving a car and had propped her phone up on the dashboard. "What's going on?"
"Maria."
"Me. Hello, Ally. Is there a reason you've made come to a random middle school?"
"Yes. Take a look." Ally turned her phone around so that Maria could see the cafeteria. "This has been like this for hours. All the adults are dead, the children gone. And no emergency services."
"Call Alina"
"Where is she?"
"With josh and joe in Oregon. She'll get here quick though."
"Okay. Taylor, excuse me." Ally walked away. Leaving no explanation, Taylor continued. "As I was saying, everybody thinks you are dead. There is nothing you can do about this. Anyway, we are part of the rebellion, you may have heard of Anthony Bergson? He is a businessman who is a megalomaniac and hopes of taking over the world. Eye captures people under 14 and over 5, those who are succeptible to an injection that erases your emotions and memories. His army break into towns at a time, attack and kidnap those who will be erased. They train to be in his army, but they've never struck in the day. This is big, and I think everything will be different from now on."
She finished, and looked at the kids.
"What are you saying?" Asked Alex.
"I'm saying you should join us. There are members worldwide, and we grow every day. Besides, you have nowhere else to go. How old are you guys?
"Eighth grade"
"Seventh grade"
"So, will you join?" She looked at them, a hint of anxiety in her eyes. Ellie looked at Chris, and it was like they had a conversation without words. Ellie, here voice trembling as she spoke, replied "we will."
It was then there was a sound of a car drawing up outside. The woman in the FaceTime call was here. Maria pulled out her gun when she saw them, and looked directly at Taylor. "Who are they?"
"New recruits. Where's Ally?"
"She's gone to contact everyone across the world. This is huge."
"You really think this is it?"
"Definitely. Once the rebellion USA has been contacted completely, which I think is almost done, there won't be a person alive in America who won't know about this by the morning."
"So you think it's begun?"
"Yes"
The four looked around in confusion. Maria smiled. "We'll tell you later. Now, get in the car. We've got to get out of here before the cops arrive." It was just as she said this that sirens began in the distance. Ellie gathered up what little sanity she had left and forced her legs to move into the car. Maria drove like a maniac, swerving constantly and talking on the phone, going 50 over the speed limit. The car drove into an abandoned town that smelt of death, and drew up to a house that seemed abandoned, but as soon as the door opened, there were many people inside. It was there Ellie and the other three learned more, and agreed fully to join the rebellion

That night, when parents turned on the t.v, an emergency announcement appeared. It consisted of a video message, only containing the words, "it has begun. You will bend to my realm. Soon, the world will be mine." America was thrown into a panic. School was cancelled, nobody came to work, crime grew, then England fell. The continents were in distress, Bergson began attacking In broad daylight. Run. Hide. You can't escape.
