I walked down the cobblestone path leading to the big tree. I sat down on a moldy log next to Lucy and started to unwrap my now soggy tomato sandwich. “How was Zia?” Emily asked. Lucy must of told them I was going to call her.
“Oh yeah great. She didn’t really say what she has been getting up to but last time I talked to her she was protecting a family of werewolves in New York.”
“Oh my god thats so cool. I can’t believe she’s allowed to just go where ever she wants. I wish my mum would let me go to New York,” Emily said then corrected herself when she saw my face. “I mean i’m sure your mum would let Zia go anyway if she was still alive”. The last comment hit a nerve. I tried to hold back the tears but somehow a few managed to escape. “Bella i’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it like that,” Emily tried to stay before being cut of by Lucy.
“Lets go babe,” Lucy said before turning around and giving Emily one of her death stares. I jumped up and started to follow Lucy back to the main school building. “You know she didn’t mean to offend you,” Lucy said sticking up for Emily.
“Yeah, I know but it’s like there’s something wrong with me. Every time someone mentions Mum I break into tears”, I choke out before starting to cry again.
“There’s nothing wrong with you Belle. It’s normal to still be upset about your Mum. On a lighter note we better go get you cleaned up before you have class with Mr Diablo.” She laughed dragging me up the stairs. As I mentioned at the start Mr Diablo is super sexy. I know he’s a teacher but there are only 7 years between us. Ok 7 years seems like a lot now but in 5 years time it will seem like nothing.
Lucy pushes me into a chair before starting on my hair. She braids it and practically murders me with the hairspray. Then she grabs some mascara and applies just enough so my eyelashes look longer but it is not to noticeable that I am wearing make-up. Lucy is taking a lot longer than usual and I can tell she is trying to take my mind off of my mum. Finally when she’s done I am allowed to look in a mirror. I don’t know how she does it but she manages to make me look beautiful with only a touch of make-up. My mother always told me that I was naturally beautiful but I can’t look in a mirror without picking out all my flaws.
The bell rings and I rush out the door but not before giving Lucy a huge hug. “Thank you,” I whisper into her ear. She nods and I continue to rush to my favorite class of the day. The study of Unicorns. Before Mr Diablo started teaching the unicorn class there was an old grumpy professor called Professor Dark. Back when he had taught I had hated the class but ever since Mr Diablo started teaching I had started to really enjoy unicorns. I walked into the room sitting down in my usual seat. Front row 3 seats from the middle. I hadn’t wanted to come across as too desperate.
Mr Diablo started the lesson with attendance. My name was towards the bottom of the list but when he reached it my heart stopped. “Arabella?” he called in his gorgeous spanish accent. I could imagine him calling me that when we were married and he would come home from work to a clean house with dinner on the table. Snap out of it Bella of course he would call you that it’s your name! “Arabella?” he called again. I must have zoned out because half the class was staring at me with weird expression on their faces. “Here,” I mumbled before going back to my day dream.
“Today we will be discussing the unicorns horn.” Mr Diablo stated. “Who knows one of the properties a unicorn horn possesses?” He asked. My arm went straight into the air before he could finish his question. “Arabella?”
“Healing properties,” I said with a smug expression on my face.
“Correct. The unicorn horn is a symbol of medicine and healing due to the fact that when crushed up and put into a medicine it could cure anything from poisonings to stomach aches to epilepsy. Because of the horns rare ability to heal, unicorns have become endangered because man have been killing them and wasting their bodies and just taking the horn.” Mr Diablo recited.
Class went on like this for another 30 minutes. Mr Diablo asking questions and kids trying to come up with answers. I sat back and enjoyed my daydream. I was married to Javier (pronounced Havier). Since we were married obviously I would be calling Mr Diablo by his first name. We had two little twins Daisy and Luca. They had his eyes and my hair. We lived in a mansion in Italy and had 2 pet dogs Bumble and Spot. We had- “Earth to Arabella!” Jessica the annoying girl next to me yelled moving her hand back and forth in front of my eyes. Aarrgh I hate it when people just force me back down to reality. Before I could have a good yell at Jessica the bell went.
I ran all the way to my locker to grab my books for my next class. I had Vampire studies next with Miss Brian and if I was even a minute late there would be big consequences. I took Vampire studies with Gemma and Emily since they both specialized in vampires. Being a Patronus of a vampire means that Gemma and Emily have a lot of the characteristics of a vampire. They are both really really fast runners, they have really good hearing and eyesight, they are both beautiful, they will grow old but still look young but they won’t live forever though they have the live span of a regular human. The only negative is once in a while they will suddenly crave blood and when they do it is wise not to be anywhere near them.
I grabbed my books and slammed my locker door shut. Just as I slammed it and turned around I bumped into Mr Lane the deputy principal sending his coffee and papers flying. “Oh my god! I’m so sorry sir,” I apologized and scrambled to help him pick up his papers.
“Arabella Martinez leave the papers I will get my new intern to clean them up. Now come with me to my office!” He shouted. I let out a sigh and followed him into the staff area of the building. He led me to his office and I took a seat at his desk while he sat in his chair and did the creepy spin around rubbing your hands together thing before facing his chair the right way. “Arabella, you know we have strict rules about running in the corridors.”
“Pardon me sir but I was not running,” I said trying not to sound like I was arguing with him.
“You may not have been running at that point in time but anyone who spins around that fast isn’t just going to slowly walk to their next class,” he said. Mr Lane as you can see is a very difficult man. It’s his way or no way so it’s best to just agree with him and move on.
“Yes sir. I understand. I apologize,” I mumbled.
“Ok. Now why exactly were you in such a hurry?” Mr Lane asked.
“I have Vampire studies now with Miss Brian and she expects all her student to be 5 minutes early.” Just then the final bell (signaling that if you are not in class now you are late) went. “Damn it,” I muttered under my breath. Luckily Mr Lane didn’t hear.
“I am going to let you go now but by tomorrow morning on my desk I want a 800 word essay on why running in the corridors is a safety issue.” Mr Lane demanded. I let out a sigh of relief. I had been expecting something a lot worse.
“Yes sir. Sorry again sir,” I said before jumping out of my seat and speed walking the rest of the way to vampire studies. I took a deep breath before stepping into the classroom. I stood still staring at Miss Brian and waited for the yelling to begin.
